Abstract:
Single wavelength laser sources used for pumping lasers demonstrate poor resistance to environmental factors. Therefore, a method for employing an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) light source for pumping thulium ion (Tm3+) doped silica microsphere (TDSM) lasers is proposed. The ASE source emits non-polarized light with a broad bandwidth. When using ASE light, there is always a wavelength group that resonates with the high-Q microsphere to adaptively couple into TDSM and excite the Tm3+ ion. The ASE source resists the resonance wavelength mismatch owing to the variation of pump light polarization caused by vibration and the variation induced by temperature change. With ASE light pumping, we demonstrated the generation of 2 mu m whispering gallery modes (WGMs) laser with a very low threshold.
