A　simplified　scheme　is　proposed　for　the　reconstruction　of　the　motional　state　of　a　trapped　ion.　In　the　scheme　the　ion　is　bichromatically　excited　by　two　lasers,　tuned　to　the　carrier　and　the　first　lower　vibrational　sideband,　respectively.　Then　the　measurement.　of　the　population　of　the　internal　state　directly　yields　the　Wigner　characteristic　function　for　the　motional　state.　The　scheme　is　easily　generalized　to　the　two-dimensional　case.
