Abstract:
Concrete arch bridges with steel webs can be regarded as a new-type composite arch bridge. In such bridges, the concrete webs of the RC arch ribs are replaced by steel webs such as corrugated or plannar webs and then connected to the ribs. Based on a double nonlinear finite element program-NLBeam3D, the nonlinear seismic response characteristics of the aforementioned bridges and a traditional RC arch bridge have been studied and compared in this paper. The analysis results demonstrate that the axial forces and out-of-plane bending moments in the arch ribs of the new-type bridge are predominant under transverse seismic excitations, which is similar to those of the RC arch bridge. And the materials at the arch springing enter the plasticity stages. On the other hand, the axial forces and in-plane bending moments are predominant under longitudinal seismic excitations. But the materials still stay in their elasticity stages. It is also found that the seismic responses of the arch ribs under transverse excitations are greater than those under longitudinal excitations. And for concrete arch bridges with steel webs, the seismic effects under both transverse and longitudinal excitations can be neglected in the analysis. Furthermore, compared with the RC arch bridge, the seismic responses of the new-type bridge is smaller representing better seismic performance.
