Abstract:
The effects of restrained shrinkage on adhesion was modeled with the finite element program ABAQUS. The results were compared to adhesion tests between old, cured concrete and fresh self-compacting concrete. The finite element model was shown to be correct. The stress distribution is affected by restrained shrinkage and this, in turn, affects adhesion. A tensile stress is obvious in the new concrete layer near the interface. Further from the interface the tensile stress decreases until the stress finally becomes compressive. Maximum shear stress appears at either end of the specimen with a shear-stress minimum in the middle. Thinner layers in the new, repair layer result in larger shrinkage induced tensile stresses. The tensile strength is minimized when the H/L of the new layer is 1/4.
