Abstract:
The method of Minimal Surfaces can remove the noise of certain image effectively and preserve its edges. However such methods, which are based on second-order nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs), tend to cause the processed images to look blocky. Fourth-order PDEs, which replace the gradient operator with the Laplacian operator, are able to avoid blocky effects. However, the equation brought forward by You and Kaveh does not possess the capability of removing isolated black speckled noise. In this paper, a new fourth-order PDE, based on the combination of the method of Minimal Surfaces and the fourth-order PDE of You and Kaveh, is proposed and tested. The new method is capable of removing isolated black speckled noise as well as avoiding blocky effects.
