Abstract:

This study used IBI(index-based build-up index) to extract built-up land information from Landsat time-series images of the year 2003, 2009 and 2016. Based on the result of IBI and the characteristics of between urban area and rural area, an algorithm of connected areas was used to extract Huaibei's urban built-up area. Spatial metrics were applied to quantify the spatial area, direction and morphology of urban expansion. Results showed that during the 13-year period, the urban built-up area had increased 57. 83 km 2 , which was 105. 4% more than the area in 2003. The direction of urban expansion were mainly distributed in the east, west and south parts of urban built-up area. Splitting urban builtup area into two revealed that the morphology of urban builtup area expansion tended to be more compact in center zone and the remaining peripheral zone tended to be less compact. Socio-economic data showed that Huaibei' s urban built-up area expansion was closely related to the growth of the city' s secondary industries and investment. At the same time, this study also revealed that the other mainly driving forces causing urban expansion included the topographical environment, the guidance of policy and the development of traffic systems. © 2018 Wuhan University.
