Abstract:

Nano-sized 20%RuO2-80%SnO2 materials were synthesized by the citrate-gel method using RuCl3, SnCl2, SnCl4 and citric acid as precursor and anhydrous ethanol as solvent. The structures of the derived powders were characterized by XRD, TEM and BET techniques. It is shown that the materials obtained were composed of rutile-type oxide phases with fairly narrow distribution in size and good thermal resistant properties. (Ru, Sn) O2 with sizes of about 10nm was obtained when SnCl2 was used as source material. Rutile-type mixed oxides of SnO2 and RuO2 was obtained while SnCl4 was used as source material. Sn ions can effectively increase the temperature that metal Ru was formed. It is above the temperature of 450-550°C at which the Ti anode was commonly prepared. The ultrafine SnO2 effectively destroyed the preferred orientation structure of RuO2, which improved the dispersing abilities and sizes of powders and would control the growth tendency of RuO2. The surface areas of the powders heated at 400°C for 1 h were bigger than that of 600°C. The powders using SnCl2 as precursor had a bigger surface area than that of SnCl4.
