Abstract:
The carbon fibers(CF) were pretreated with H3PO4/HNO3, and the acid-treated CF was obtained. After that, acid-treated CF was grafted with diphenyl methane diisocyanate(MDI), and the modified CF (MCF) was fabricated. subsequently, the MCF/thermoplastic polyurethane(TPU) composite foamed materials could be prepared through the addition of MCF into TPU matrix. The surface characteristics of modified CF, the structures properties and section morphology of foamed composites were investigated by FT-IR, XPS, XRD, Raman and FESEM. The results show that chemical grafting can gain functional groups, high roughness and disorder of carbon fibers, which can improve the compatibility and interface bonding strength between carbon fibers and TPU. Compared to 3% CF/TPU, the tensile strength, elongation at break, tear strength, rebound resilience of 3% MCF/TPU are increased by 16.1%, 18.5%, 4.5%, 6.7% respectively, whereas the compression set is reduced by 6.9%. © 2016, Editorial Board of Polymer Materials Science & Engineering.
