Abstract:

In Taiwan, the college enrollment rate has increased substantially. Taiwan has the highest percentage of university students in the world, but after industry migration and financial tsunami, newcomers in the workplace are facing a more arduous job-hunting situation. Therefore, the unemployment rate of college graduates has also gone up. This study aims at developing a set of evaluation indicators applicable to competitive advantage of design departments in Taiwan. This study was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, related literature, theories, and empirical researches were summarized; content analysis is used to draw the outline of expert interview and first draft of indicators. At the second stage, revised expert Delphi method is adopted to implement two rounds of expert questionnaire survey. In this way, evaluation indicators of design students’ competitive advantages are constructed and the importance of the weight and sequence of these indicators are determined, thus, to provide emphasis and direction for design departments to plan the curriculum and evaluate teaching achievements, offer references for the diagnosis of design students’ pre-service ability to design and understand that education is practical and applicable. Definite evaluation indicators developed here can also be used as a standard for related education units to assess students’ competences, as well as bases for the industry to choose talents and make appraisal in the future. © 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
