Abstract:

Magnesium silicate nanoparticles had been successfully synthesized with a chemical precipitation method in water (MS) and alcohol-water systems (T-MS). The as-prepared samples feature high adsorption performance for cationic pollutants. The powder X-ray diffraction analysis (PXRD) indicates that the MS and T-MS samples are amorphous, and SEM and TEM reveals that the both samples form aggregation comprising of nanoparticles with an average diameter of 30 nm. The MS nanoparticles are more inclined to aggregate as cluster, while the T-MS nanoparticles are more uniformly distributed. Their adsorption performance was evaluated by using methylene blue (MB) was used as the model pollutant. The results showed that the T-MS samples reaches adsorption equilibrium earlier. The maximum adsorption capacities are 135 mg/g and 117 mg/g for T-MS and MS samples, respectively. In addition, the competitive adsorption test proves that the adsorption capacity of T-MS for MB does not degrade, even with the presence of Methyl orange, Cl-, SO2- 4 or metallic ions, which showed the T-MS samples feature high selective removal of cationic dyes. Zeta potentials testified that the electrostatic interaction dominated the adsorption process. This work not only provide a promising absorbent for collecting dye pollutants, but also offers a simple method for large scale preparation of nanosized magnesium silicate.
