Abstract:
Suspender is the main component of half through or through arch bridges, connecting decks to arch ribs, transferring dead loads and live loads from the decks to the arch ribs, in order to realize the spanning function of arch bridges. Any failure of suspenders may cause collapse of deck system and partial or whole damage of arch ribs. Therefore, it should be ensured that suspenders must be strong enough in bridge's service life, or avoid the occurrence of any disastrous accident when suspender breakage happens. But the existing design code does not consider the reacting force generated by suspenders breakage, nor does it limit the internal force and deformation in girders when inclined cable breakaae happens as that in the "Guidelines for Design of Highway Cable-Stayed Bridge".Taking Shenzhen North Railway Station Bridge as an engineering background and using ANSYS/LS-DYNA as FEM analysis tool, this paper makes a dynamic-contact and impact-simulation to the breakage process of a short double-suspender. The FEM simulation results indicate that stresses in certain suspenders may exceed their allowable stress due to the breakage of the short suspenders while others are not subjected to breakage; and that the girder may be destroyed and the deck system may be collapsed due to its significant vertical deflection.
