Abstract:

The glass forming ability, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of Ce69.5-xCu18Al11Nb1.5Yx(x=0,1,2,3) bulk metallic glasses had been studied. It is shown that the Y addition can improve the glass forming ability of Ce-Cu-Al-Nb alloys. The Ce67.5Cu18Al11Nb1.5Y2 sample exhibits the largest supercooled liquid region ΔTx=97 K, and the lowest glass transition temperature Tg=349 K. All the samples exhibit brittle fracture during compression at 298 K. The fracture surfaces of samples are dominated by vein-like patterns. However, all the samples exhibit significant macroscopic plastic deformation during compression at 363 K. The stress overshoot phenomenon can be observed for the samples with x=0-2. The Ce67.5Cu18Al11Nb1.5Y2 sample exhibits the lowest flow stress and the extended strain platform, which are favorable for the plastic working. The Y addition can improve the corrosion resistance of Ce-Cu-Al-Nb alloys, and the Ce67.5Cu18Al11Nb1.5Y2sample has the best corrosion resistance. ©, 2014, Editorial Office of Transactions of Materials and Heat Treatment.
