Abstract:

Dissimilatory iron reduction plays an important role in the biogeochemical cycling of iron, sulfur, carbon, and other elements in coastal tidal wetlands. This process is impacted by the unique topography, hydrology, and bioturbation of each coastal tidal wetland area, causing it to exhibit considerable spatial and temporal heterogeneity. Study of dissimilatory iron reduction will not only benefit understanding of organic matter degradation, but may also provide an important theoretical foundation for the future evaluation of green-house gas emissions. The review lists the contributions of iron reduction to anaerobic organic matter oxidation obtained from the coastal tidal wetlands all over the world. The present review also introduces the mechanism and control factors of iron reduction including organic matter substrates, iron-reducing microorganisms, and other competitive electron acceptors (e.g., sulfate). Future research in this field is addressed at the end of this review. The purpose of this review is to draw more attention to iron reduction and hopefully offer useful references for biogeochemists.
