Abstract:
An investigation was conducted on the adsorption of a cationic dye methylene blue (MB) on a spherical cellulose adsorbent, which was prepared by homogeneous graft copolymerization of cellulose with acrylic acid in an ionic liquid (IL) l-N-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIMC1) followed by spheriodization of the graft copolymer by means of the water-in-oil suspension technique. It was found that the adsorption of the MB on the adsorbent was solution pH, initial concentration of MB, time and temperature dependent. The adsorption process followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and was controlled by diffusion process. Desorption and regeneration experiments showed that the MB adsorbed on the adsorbent could be easily recovered by 2.0 mol/L HC1 aqueous solution, and after 3 replications of the adsorption and desorption process, the adsorbent still showed high adsorption efficiency towards the MB.
