毛姆的作品大都以探讨人性价值和人生意义为主题。毛姆对人生意义和人性价值的探索过程,也就是他的精神信仰之旅。毛姆的精神探索大概可以分为对基督教的摒弃,对叔本华哲学思想的认同,以及想借助东方哲学来拯救西方文明这三个阶段。
