Abstract:

With the development of national economy and the continuous improvement of people's living standard, the diversification and specialization of polystyrene (PS) products have become the development trend of market competition and consumers' requirements. As an important modification method to improve the properties of PS special materials, catalytic hydrogenation process has become a research hotspot in the field of chemical modification of unsaturated polymers in recent years. Herein, the improvement of hydrogenation process, the design and optimization of hydrogenation catalysts and the new progress of reaction mechanism in the preparation of polycyclohexylethylene (PCHE) through PS heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation were reviewed. The influence of the structure design, physical and chemical properties of the hydrogenation catalyst and mass transfer diffusion resistance on the process of PS hydrogenation catalyst activity was elaborated. The 'Blocky' mechanism of PS hydrogenation was discussed in the heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation system. It is suggested that the future research of PS hydrogenation catalysts should be focused on the structure design of catalysts to ensure high accessibility of the active sites for polymer molecules and optimize the balance between the mass transfer diffusion in the hydrogenation system and dispersity of active sites on the catalyst carrier. At the same time, in order to further improve the comprehensive performance of hydrogenation catalysts, more efforts should be devoted to the fundamental research on the hydrogenation mechanism of polymers and synthesis/modification technology of catalysts. © 2021, Editorial Board of Polymer Materials Science & Engineering.
