Abstract:
Smithsonite was refloated and recovered successfully from a low grade (Zn < 1%) zinc oxide ore sample (Wulagen Pb-Zn sulphide flotation tail) in lab batch scale tests using amines and Na2S. Combining sodium sulphide, sodium carbonate and sodium silicate in the rougher stage is suitable for dressing this ore sample. With 1 kg/t sodium carbonate (pH modifier), Na2S dosage could be reduced almost by half. Three ether amines and one commonly used fatty amine-docecyl amine (DDA) were tested in this article. OPA 1214 (normal-alkyl ether amine) showed superior performance than two iso-alkyl ether amines and DDA in both rougher and cleaning stages. Desliming affects flotation performance differently in batch flotation tests using different amines. Performance of the test using OPA 1214 improved significantly in aspects of concentrate grade, rougher recovery and flotation kinetics. In an open circle cleaning stage, Zn recovery (64%) in cleaning concentrate is two times higher than that using DDA. Zn grade (21%) in cleaning concentrate using OPA 1214 is also higher. The results were satisfying. OPA 1214 was chosen as a candidate collector to be further trialled in a pilot test on site.
