Abstract:
In this paper, ytterbium nitrate and sodium tungstate are used as raw materials to prepare a kind of novel lamellar ytterbium tungstate (Yb2WO6) powder by hydrothermal synthesis. γ-ray shielding performance of Yb2WO6 under low, medium and high energy fields was tested by dispersing the powder into epoxy resin matrix to obtain a composite material (EP/Yb2WO6). SEM showed that Yb2WO6 existed in flakes, with different sizes but relatively uniform thickness. Through the test of epoxy resin composite with lamellar Yb2WO6 in low, medium and high energy fields, it is found that the material showed good γ-ray shielding performance at various energy levels. In the feeble absorbing area of lead (40 keV~88 keV), the lead equivalent of the material reaches 0.0266 cm-1, which was a significant improvement over other energy levels. At the same time, the lamellar ytterbium tungstate solves the shortcoming of lead-based materials that are highly toxic, so the material is suitable for future nuclear medicine and radiation shielding fields. © 2022, Editorial Office of "Chinese Rare Earths".
