Abstract:

In practice, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) materials have been widely used to reinforce structures. A new type of composite member, i.e., high-strength steel-concrete-FRP-concrete (SCFC) composite columns, was proposed by taking advantage of high-strength steel and FRP. Hence, this paper conducted an experimental and numerical study on its eccentric compressive behavior. A total of 11 tests were designed, with main testing parameters including the thickness of GFRP tube (tf), thickness of steel tube (ts), eccentricity (e), yield strength of steel (fy), and compressive strength of concrete (fc′). Results indicated that: (i) the high-strength SCFC member had obvious post-yield strengthening behavior, owing to the confining effect from the FRP tube, and (ii) the member reached peak load when the GFRP tube fractured. A finite element (FE) model was established and benchmarked, and parametric analyses were conducted based on the benchmarked FE model. It was found that: (i) increasing fy, tf or FRP tube diameter-to-width ratio (Df/B) improved the strength but had no significant effect on the initial stiffness; (ii) increasing ts and fc′ increased both the strength and the initial stiffness; (iii) increasing e reduced the strength and the initial stiffness; and (iv) the eccentric compression behavior of the member was similar to that of square concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) when e was high. Finally, equations for estimating the strength of high-strength square SCFC columns under eccentric compression were proposed. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd
