Abstract:

Ionic covalent organic frameworks (iCOFs), a subset of burgeoning COFs materials featuring both charged sites and ordered frameworks, have been increasingly recognized due to their unique properties and unrivaled potential in a plethora of energy functionalities. However, current progress on the applications of iCOFs for various energy aspects have not been comprehensively overviewed. Facing the prosperous growth of iCOF fields, the review exploring the seminal advanced electro-, photo-, and thermo- energy functionalities of iCOFs are presented here. Beginning with a reflection on the classification and building units of iCOFs, the construction principles employed for iCOFs are elucidated. Then the state-of-the-art advancements of iCOFs in electricity generation and storage devices are summarized. And meanwhile, the functionalities in photo -induced energy conversion as well as thermal energy management systems are coordinately focused. Further, the concise discussions regarding to the intricate relationship between the ionic structure and multifarious functions within iCOFs are delved. Finally, a comprehensive analysis on both opportunities available to iCOFs and challenges they face currently are conducted. The insights from this review pave the way for the fabrication of next -generation high-performance iCOFs and open new perspectives for their extensive industrial applications.
