Abstract:

The influences of embedded carbon profiled steel (CPS), eccentricity and slenderness ratio on steel-reinforced concrete-filled (rectangular) stainless steel tubular (SRCFSST) specimens were investigated by eccentric compression tests. Test results demonstrated that the embedding of CPS improved the load-carrying capacity, expanded the plastic hinge range and inhibited the development of concrete cracks in the rectangular SRCFSST columns. Before achieving the peak load, the majority of the confining stress was presented in the corner region of the rectangular stainless steel tube. After that, both CPS and rectangular stainless steel tube delivered the confinement. A finite element (FE) model was developed to study the effects of different parameters on the axial load versus bending moment curves and axial compression stability coefficients of the rectangular SRCFSST columns. The carbon steel ratio and material strength were the most affecting parameters. Finally, a revised simplified model for determining the eccentric compression resistances of the rectangular SRCFSST columns were developed. The predictions using the simplified model agreed well with the test results or FE results. © 2024
