Abstract:

Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) is a material with superior mechanical characteristics which are attributed to the use of a high-volume fraction of steel fibers and an ultra-high strength cementitious matrix. One of the key challenges of the use of UHPFRC is its increased cost and the scatter of the mechanical characteristics which are both attributed to the addition of a high-volume fraction of steel fibers. A suitable fiber orientation method could have significant benefits towards the improvement of the mechanical performance of UHPFRC. This paper is focused on a systematic study of the effect of electromagnetic field and chute fiber orientation with vibration table methods on the tensile strength of UHPFRC with various steel fiber volume fractions (Vf: 1 %, 2 %, and 3 %). In addition to the mechanical testing, X-ray CT scan image analyses were conducted to quantitatively evaluate fiber orientation. The 2D slices produced by the X-ray CT scan image analyses clearly show the effectiveness of the steel fiber orientation method and showed potential for further improvement. The results of this research show that the application of suitable orientation methods can lead to significant reduction of the required volume fraction of steel fibers and subsequent cost reduction, as the results of UHPFRC with 3 % and 2 % fibers lead to similar results to the UHPFRC with 2 % and 1 % oriented steel fibers respectively. Also, a numerical tensile constitutive model was developed for UHPFRC with oriented fibers, based on the experimental results. The proposed model can facilitate the extensive use of UHPFRC as it be used by practitioners for the analysis and design of UHPFRC element/structures.
