Abstract:
Oriented object detection is effective in reducing irrelevant backgrounds and distinguishing densely arranged slanted objects, facilitating high-level intelligence tasks such as visual positioning, auxiliary shooting and autonomous navigation. However, it is rarely investigated in the field of aerial power inspection. This paper surveys crucial issues of universal oriented object detection and reviews the studies of oriented object detection for aerial power inspection. With the aim of validating the potential of oriented object detection for power inspection, a challenging power dataset that contains two representative power components and several typical disadvantages is constructed, and the performance of several representative methods are examined and analyzed. On this basis, the challenges of oriented object detection for aerial power inspection are summed up, and the potential solutions are discussed. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
