Abstract:
This study explores how spherical video-based virtual reality (SVVR) affects learners' foreign language enjoyment (FLE) in the Chinese English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) speaking class with an experiential learning model. A sixteen-week quasi-experiment was conducted by adopting a pre-post design. Two classes of 69 sophomores in total participated, with one assigned as the experimental group to practice speaking in an SVVR-assisted learning environment and the other, the control group, to follow the traditional instruction routine. Instruments included an 11-item FLE questionnaire and speaking tests. A series of ANCOVA results showed that the experimental group demonstrated better speaking performance and a higher FLE level than the control group, with significant effects shown in the dimensions of FLEprivate and FLE-atmosphere. The study thus stresses the potential benefits of applying SVVR as a supplementary method for enhancing EFL learners' positive emotions and academic performance, particularly in speaking, which points to a feasible way of coping with students' emotions in an EFL classroom. © 2025 IEEE.
