Ultracompact and Polarization-Independent On-Chip Mode Exchangers Enabled by Subwavelength Grating Metamaterials SCIE

Abstract :

Different from conventional mode-order converters, the mode exchangers (EXCij), enabling flexible data exchanging between i-th-mode and j-th-mode, are essential building blocks for passive signal switching, signal routing, and high-capacity mode division multiplexing (MDM) networks. However, mode changers are limited by the strong polarization-dependence, especially on the 220-nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. In this paper, an ultracompact and polarization-independent EXC01 and EXC02 are proposed to overcome this limitation by using MZI-like models. Here, subwavelength grating (SWG) metamaterials are introduced to the input/output Y-branches for mode splitting/combining and one arm for phase shifting. As such, a pi phase difference is formed by the SWG-manipulated phase shifter and then the modes guided in branches are combined into the required output modes. The characterizations show low insertion losses (<1.6 dB) and crosstalk (<-15 dB) over bandwidths of 31 nm and 49 nm, for EXC01 and EXC02, respectively. For footprints, EXC01/EXC02 has ultracompact size of 13.42 x 1.704/2.044 x 8.434 mu m(2). For the first time, a polarization-independent mode change between 0-th-mode (0-th-mode) and 1-th-mode (2-th-mode) are achieved and can be applied in in flexible MDM systems, signal routing, passive signal switching and beyond.

Abstract :

We present what we believe is the first report on a polarization-insensitive 3 x 3 silicon star-crossing utilizing a composite subwavelength metamaterial waveguide structure. Two different types of subwavelength grating meta- materials (nanohole grating and fan-shaped bent subwavelength grating) are respectively used to address diffraction issues in the crossing region and mode interference issues caused by a compact non-adiabatic design. This approach results in a device with an ultra-compact footprint of 12.68 x 10.98 mu m(2) on a standard 220 nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. Simulation results show low insertion loss (IL) values of < 0.2 dB/0.3 dB and suppressed cross talk (CT) levels of < -27.2 dB/-23.6 dB for TE/TM polarizations across a wavelength range of 100 nm (1500-1600 nm). Experimental measurements of the fabricated devices confirm outstanding performance, with IL values of < 0.35 dB/0.4 dB and CT levels of < -31.5 dB/-28.6 dB for TE/TM polarization in the C-band. Abstract :

This study presents the design and experimental demonstration of a high-performance all-silicon transverse magnetic (TM) polarizer. The tilted-elliptical-hole arrays are designed to effectively reflect transverse electric (TE) modes while propagating TM modes with low loss. The device bandwidth (BW) is controlled by changing the tilting angle of the elliptical hole or by combining it with changes in other parameters. The device operates beyond 326 nm (1385-1711 nm) in BW, achieving an average insertion loss (IL) below 1.0 dB and a polarization extinction ratio (PER) over 20 dB. A 20 nm shift in BW can be obtained with a 30 degrees deflection, and an 80 nm shift can be achieved with multiple parameter changes. The experimental results confirm the theoretical analysis. The present device with the advantages of simple structure, flexible design, and broad BW has great potential applications in silicon photonics. (c) 2024 Optica Publishing Group. Abstract :

A broadband and low-loss power splitter with polarization manipulation using subwavelength gratings (SWGs) is proposed and analyzed, where SWGs are embedded in input taper/output inverse tapered waveguides in the bottom layer to form an SWG-based structure, and a silicon nitride layer is placed above the bottom layer to form a low-index guiding structure. In the bottom layer, the TE mode is cut off as the input strip waveguide is tapered down. In this way, the injected TE mode is evenly coupled to two adjacent output ports with high efficiency by the assistance of SWGs. By contrast, the input TM mode is well supported by the above silicon nitride layer and directly transmitted to the Through port, which is almost not influenced by the bottom structures. Consequently, both power splitting and polarization handling are achieved in the designed device simultaneously. Simulation results show that an extinction ratio (ER) of 32.63 dB (18.56 dB) and insertion loss (IL) of 0.16 dB (0.16 dB) for the TE (TM) mode are obtained at 1.55 mu m. The bandwidth is up to 191 nm (1450-1641 nm) for the TE mode and 200 nm (1450-1650 nm) for the TM mode with an ER exceeding 15 dB and IL below 0.3 dB. Abstract :

With the increasing capacity demands of data communications, mode division multiplexing in on-chip optical interconnect systems is becoming an attractive solution. Compact, broadband, and fabrication-tolerant mode-order converters unaffected by polarizations are considered crucial for the progress of on-chip systems utilizing mode division multiplexing. A proposal for a design scheme for an on-chip mode-order converter that is insensitive to polarization is presented, utilizing a combination of 3D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The conversion of TE0/TM0-to-TE1/TM1 mode is achieved through phase matching between a subwavelength grating and an input-output tapered waveguide. Theoretical studies indicate that the TE0-to-TE1 and TM0-to-TM1 insertion losses are below 0.46 dB and 0.78 dB at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The TE0-to-TE1 and TM0-to-TM1 insertion loss is under 1.0 dB, with crosstalk below -15 dB within the 190 nm (1432 similar to 1622 nm) and 81 nm (1515 similar to 1596 nm) operating ranges. Experimental data indicates that the device measuring 7 x 1.58 mu m(2) can successfully convert mode orders regardless of polarization within an 81 nm bandwidth (1515 similar to 1596 nm), effectively doubling the data transmission capacity of the MDM system. In addition, the devices fabricated by a standard CMOS process demonstrate the potential for mass production.

Orthogonal eigenmodes in multimode waveguides are an indispensable physical dimension for enhancing the capacity of optical communications, and efficient mode converters are therefore of vital functional significance. However, the conventional single-pair mode conversion in a single device is having difficulty meeting the ever-increasing demand for optical capacity. By contrast, the multi-pair mode converter can improve the multiplexing capacity and be further applied in spatial-mode-oriented passive signal switching and permutation cipher. Here, a scalable multi-mode converting model, combing the multimode interference and beam shaping by exploiting subwavelength metamaterials, is firstly reported to enable simultaneous multi-spatial-mode manipulation and break its polarization-dependency limit. Based on this model, five proof-of-concept converters are designed, realizing polarization-independent, and multi-mode conversions, or a combination of both within compact lengths (< 17.436 mu m). For the first time, TE0/TM0-to-TE2/TM2, TE0/TE1/TE2-to-TE2/TE3/ TE4, TE0/TE1/TM0/TM1-to-TE2/TE3/TM2/TM3, and TE0/TE1-to-TE1/TE2 converters are reported and experimentally demonstrated, covering a double/triple/quadruple-mode manipulation in a single device. From measurements, these converters exhibit low insertion losses (0.72 to 1.65 dB) and intermodal crosstalks (-30.26 to -12.19 dB) at 1550 nm, and have a 56-nm/30-nm bandwidth of loss < 1.4 dB/1.9 dB and crosstalk < -13 dB/-10.5 dB, for the best/worst case. The proposed multi-mode converting model can manipulate multiple input modes in parallel and beak the polarization-dependency limit for multi-spatial-mode conversion, which holds great potential for spatial-mode-oriented nanophotonic systems.
