Can we return good for evil? A meta-analysis of social exclusion and prosocial behaviour SSCI
2025 , 64 (2) | BRITISH JOURNAL OF SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Numerous studies have discussed the connection between social exclusion and prosocial behaviour, yet the conclusions have been inconsistent. We conducted a three-level meta-analysis on 83 effect sizes derived from 53 studies (N = 21,405). Overall, a significant yet weak negative correlation was found between social exclusion and prosocial behaviour (r = -.10, 95% CI [-0.17, -0.04]). Moderator analysis revealed that individuals in collectivistic cultures may exhibit higher levels of prosocial behaviour following exclusion compared to those in individualistic cultures. The female proportion positively influenced the overall effect size. The type of prosocial behaviour was marginally significant, in that 'other' prosocial behaviour yielded the largest effect sizes. However, effects did not differ across age groups, between the inclusion condition and the neutral condition, or between experimental research and correlational research. Our results underscore the crucial roles of culture and gender in the relationship between social exclusion and prosocial behaviour.

Abstract :

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Will Internet Availability Fuel Problematic Internet Use? A Cross-Temporal Meta-analysis of Patterns in China from 2003 to 2020 SSCI
2024 , 11 (1) , 113-124 | CURRENT ADDICTION REPORTS
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Purpose of ReviewProblematic internet use (PIU) has varied across countries and eras, but how it may relate to internet availability has not been well examined. This cross-temporal meta-analysis aimed to explore the association between PIU severity changes and internet availability development in China over the past few decades and how it may relate to gender and age.Recent FindingsThe results showed that China's overall PIU level has increased over time, and these changes were associated with the increase in factors related to internet availability. Gender-related differences in PIU decreased over time, and it appeared related to more gender equality in internet penetration and use. In addition, college students with relatively higher internet availability were found to have higher overall PIU scores than secondary-school students, and that their PIU scores increased over time, while secondary-school students' scores remained largely consistent.SummaryPIU severity increased in China during 2003-2020, and it appears to be associated with the increase in internet availability, which supports the internet availability hypothesis on PIU.

Rich Get Richer: Extraversion Statistically Predicts Reduced Internet Addiction through Less Online Anonymity Preference and Extraversion Compensation SSCI
2022 , 12 (6) | BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Internet addiction may arise from multiple factors and personality tendencies have been previously implicated. Prior studies have found that extraversion may be a protective factor mitigating against internet addiction, yielding a "rich-get-richer" effect. However, few studies have explored how extraversion may influence internet addiction from the perspective of online-offline integration. Drawing on a sample of 428 college students, the current study examined a serial mediation model exploring the underlying mechanisms of how extraversion may statistically predict internet addiction through online-offline integration and antecedent factors. The serial mediation model analyses indicated that extraverted internet users exhibited a weaker preference for online anonymity and less online extraversion compensation, thus formulating a higher level of online-offline integration than introverted individuals, which, in turn, appeared to reduce the risk of internet addiction. In contrast, with regard to specific components of online-offline integration, introverted internet users preferred online anonymity, which reduced their relationship integration and increased their likelihood of internet addiction; similarly, the introverted individuals were also more likely to exhibit an extraversion compensation effect. That is, they were more extraverted on the internet than in general; hence, they had a lower level of self-identity integration, resulting in a greater likelihood of experiencing internet addiction. These results highlight the importance of online-offline integration that may account for personality variations in social and psychological outcomes related to internet use, and suggest a role for online anonymity preference and extraversion compensation in influencing specific components of integration.

Do men become addicted to internet gaming and women to social media? A meta-analysis examining gender-related differences in specific internet addiction SSCI

Abstract :

Males have been proposed to be more vulnerable to internet addiction (IA) than females. However, males and females may differ with respect to specific patterns and types of internet usage and related IA. To investigate further, a meta-analysis was conducted to investigate gender-related differences in internet gaming disorder (IGD) and social media addiction (SMA). The current meta-analysis aimed to quantify gender-related effect sizes relating to IGD and SMA, examine potential moderating influences of regions and other possible confounds, and compare the findings with generalized IA at the country level. The meta-analysis comprised 53 effect sizes with 82,440 individuals from 21 countries/regions for IGD, and 41 effect sizes with 58,336 individuals from 22 countries/regions for SMA. A random-effects model confirmed important gender-specific distinctions as men were more likely to exhibit IGD than women (g = 0.479) and less likely to exhibit SMA than women (g = 0.202). Additional moderator analyses revealed that effect sizes of IGD and SMA were larger in Europe and the Americas than in Asia. Further analyses indicated that the effect sizes of gender-related differences in IGD and SMA at the country-level were significantly larger than those in generalized IA, which suggests that genderrelated differences in specific IAs may be underestimated in the "umbrella" of generalized IA. Results have implications for explaining why males and females may become addicted to internet use through different pathways.
