Effect of annealing parameters on microstructure, texture, and mechanical properties of hot-rolled pure yttrium plate SCIE

Abstract :

This study investigates the effects of different annealing parameters on the microstructure, texture, and mechanical properties of hot-rolled pure yttrium plates using electron backscatter diffraction for the first time. With the increase of annealing temperature and time, the volume fraction of low-angle grain boundaries of hot-rolled pure yttrium plate decreases. While the intensity of the texture firstly decreases and then increases. During annealing at 600 degrees C, the {0002} pole density shifted from deviating from the normal direction (ND) by similar to 30 degrees to being in line with the ND as the annealing time increased, forming a typical basal texture. This can be attributed to its unique recrystallization mechanism. The strength and hardness of the as-annealed samples were significantly lower than that under the hot-rolled state, while the elongation increased when compared with the hot-rolled sample. The considerable mechanical properties of pure yttrium plate are obtained by hot rolling and following annealing at 600 degrees C for 1 h.

Activation mechanism of multiple twin variants during uniaxial compression in pure titanium SCIE
期刊论文 | 2025 , 1024 | JOURNAL OF ALLOYS AND COMPOUNDS
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

The microstructure of commercially pure titanium subjected to uniaxial compression was meticulously analyzed using electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) to investigate the variant activation behavior of {11-22} twins and {10-12} twins. The results reveal that the type and number of activated twin variants are strongly dependent on the loading direction-whether applied along the normal direction (ND) or the rolling direction (RD). Notably, loading along ND can activate up to five twin variants, and most are activated with low Schmid Factor (SF) rank but high SF value. The variation in the number of activated twin variants within a grain is influenced by factors such as grain size, the activation stress of twinning versus slip, and the orientation of the loading direction relative to the c-axis. SF value for two twinning systems ({11-22} twins and {10-12} twins) were systematically calculated in pure titanium as a function of the angle between the c-axis and the loading direction, which indicates that compression along a direction closely aligned with the c-axis has the potential to activate up to six variants of {11-22} twins simultaneously. In contrast, compression perpendicular to the c-axis tends to activate fewer {10-12} twin variants, with the twinning activation being highly sensitive to the degree of c-axis rotation.

Preparation and Post-Processing of Three-Dimensional Printed Porous Titanium Alloys SCIE

Abstract :

Ti6Al4V is widely utilized in orthopedic implants due to its excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. However, traditional solid titanium implants exhibit an elastic modulus (90-115 GPa) significantly higher than that of human bone (10-30 GPa), leading to stress shielding and implant loosening. To address this, porous titanium alloys have been developed to better match bone elasticity. Additive manufacturing, particularly selective laser melting (SLM), enables precise control over pore size and porosity, thereby tuning mechanical properties. Nevertheless, SLM-produced porous structures often suffer from powder adhesion, which compromises bone integration and patient safety. In this study, bulk Ti6Al4V samples were fabricated via SLM with a fixed laser power of 200 W and varying scanning speeds (800-1400 mm/s). Density measurements and surface defect analysis identified 1200 mm/s as the optimal scanning speed. Cubic unit cell scaffolds with different pore diameters (400, 600, 800 mu m) and porosities (60%, 80%) were subsequently designed. Compression tests revealed that scaffolds with a 400 mu m pore diameter and 60% porosity exhibited the highest compressive strength (794 MPa) and fracture strain (41.35%). Chemical polishing using a diluted HF-HNO3 solution (1:2:97) effectively removed adhered powder without significant structural degradation, with 40 min identified as the optimal polishing duration.

Study on the microstructure, properties and strengthening mechanisms of electrophoretic deposited carbon-nanotubes/Cu composites SCIE
期刊论文 | 2025 , 221 | MATERIALS CHARACTERIZATION
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

The laminated carbon-nanotubes/Cu (CNTs/Cu) composites were fabricated by electrophoretic deposition (EPD), spark plasma sintering (SPS), and hot rolling to achieve a good combination of properties. The microstructure, mechanical properties, and electrical conductivity were investigated, and the strengthening mechanism was discussed. Results indicated that functional groups were introduced onto the surface of CNTs after acid treatment, enabling the formation of an optimal CNT deposition morphology on the Cu matrix at an electrophoretic deposition voltage of 75 V. The sintered CNTs/Cu composite exhibits a laminated structure with coarse grains and randomly distributed textures. Compared to sintered pure Cu, the sintered composite demonstrates a 42.07 % increase in tensile strength and a 17.8 % improvement in elongation. And the electrical conductivity reaches 93.05 % of the International Annealed Copper Standard (IACS). Subsequent hot rolling refined the grains and reoriented the texture to deformation textures. The hot-rolled composites achieve a tensile strength of 355 MPa, an elongation of 12.2 %, and a conductivity of 85.53 % IACS. The strengthening mechanisms of CNTs/Cu composites involve grain refinement, load transfer, and thermal mismatch strengthening, with grain refinement as the primary factor. Grain refinement, crack deflection, and bridging-pullout of CNTs are mainly responsible for the good combination of strength, ductility and electrical conductivity.

Effects of Hf addition on the microstructure and properties of Cu-Sn-P alloy SCIE

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

In this paper, the effects of Hf addition on the mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and microstructure of Cu-Sn-P alloy were investigated. The results show that the Hf addition can enhance the mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of Cu-Sn-P alloy. The alloy with 0.05 wt% Hf exhibits the best comprehensive performance with yield strength of 625 MPa, tensile strength of 661 MPa and electrical conductivity of 16.8 %IACS. Compared with the Cu-Sn-P alloy without Hf addition, the yield strength and tensile strength are increased by 8.4% and 7.8%, and the electrical conductivity is increased by 24.4%. The increase in the strength of Hf-added alloy can be attributed to the synergistic effect of multiple strengthening mechanisms, including fine grain strengthening, twin strengthening, dislocation strengthening, precipitation strengthening and Sigma 3n (n = 1, 2, 3) grain boundary strengthening. Moreover, the Hf-P precipitates can be observed in the Hf-added alloy. According to the amount of Hf addition, these precipitates can manifest as the fine HfP2 phase and the coarse HfP phase. The formation of Hf-P precipitates contributes to the precipitation strengthening and the purification of Cu matrix, thus contributing to the improvement of strength and conductivity.

Asymmetric tension-compression mechanical behaviors of extruded Mg-4.58Zn-2.6Gd-0.18Zr alloy with double-peak fiber texture SCIE

Abstract :

To clarify asymmetric mechanical behaviors of the extruded Mg-4.58Zn-2.6Gd-0.18Zr alloy during room temperature tension and compression, the evolution of microstructure, texture and strain hardening rate were systematically investigated when loading along the extrusion direction (ED). The results found that the asextruded alloy exhibited <1010>-<1120> double-peak fiber texture, leading to obvious tension compression yield asymmetry and compressive yield plateau. Fiber texture kept stable and only texture intensity gradually decreased with the increasing tensile strain, while fiber texture was exhausted due to the extension twinning and <0001> texture component was aggravated with the increasing compressive strain. Moreover, twinning parts within grains with <1010> fiber texture was re-oriented to the c-axis paralleling to the ED, and that in <1120> fiber texture deviated about 30 degrees away from the ED. This soft orientation would be finally rotated to the <0001> paralleling to the ED under the action of basal slip, explaining why the <0001> pole dispersed at first and then concentrated with the increasing compressive strain. Three stages of strain hardening rate were both observed for tensile and compressive tests, while increment of Stage II was only observed under compression. Stage II in compression could be further divided into two parts with different slopes. Such phenomenon was seldom reported in Mg alloys, which was caused by different propagation and re-orientation of extension twinning in double-peak fiber texture, and weakened the effect of twin lamella segmentation with the increasing compressive strain. Findings in this work given us a better understanding of asymmetric tensile-compressive mechanical behaviors of extruded Mg alloys with double-peak fiber texture.

Effect of Loading Direction on Tensile-Compressive Mechanical Behaviors of Mg-5Zn-2Gd-0.2Zr Alloy with Heterogeneous Grains SCIE
期刊论文 | 2024 , 14 (10) | CRYSTALS
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

The tension-compression yield asymmetry caused by the strengthening of Mg-Zn-Gd-Zr alloy due to extrusion deformation is an important issue that must be addressed in its application. In this study, the effects of loading direction on the tensile and compressive mechanical behaviors of Mg-5Zn-2Gd-0.2Zr alloy were systematically investigated. As the loading angle (the angle between the loading direction and the extrusion direction) increases from 0 degrees to 30 degrees, 45 degrees, 60 degrees and 90 degrees, the tensile yield strength decreases more significantly than the compressive yield strength. Consequently, the tension-compression yield asymmetry is gradually improved. Additionally, the ultimate compressive strength decreases more markedly than the ultimate tensile strength with the increment of the loading angle. In tensile tests conducted at 0 degrees, 30 degrees and 45 degrees, two distinct stages of decreasing strain hardening rates are typically observed. For the 60 degrees and 90 degrees tensile tests, one unusual ascending stage of strain hardening rate is observed. For all compressive tests, three stages of strain hardening are consistently noted; however, the increment in strain hardening rate caused by {10-12} extension twinning decreases with the increasing loading angle. A model combining loading angle and Schmid factor distribution was established. The calculated results indicate that the dominant deformation modes during the yielding process also vary significantly with the loading conditions. This clarification highlights the differences in yield strength variations between tension and compression. Finally, an analysis of the plane trace and crack propagation direction near the fracture surface reveals the fracture mechanisms associated with tensile and compressive tests at different loading directions. This study promotes understanding of the mechanical behaviors of Mg-5Zn-2Gd-0.2Zr alloy under different loading directions, and helps to thoroughly elucidate the anisotropic effects of texture on the mechanical properties of magnesium alloys.

Abstract :

A series of zirconium phosphate (ZrP) loaded H -beta -25 zeolite (i.e., ZrP@HB) multifunctional composite catalysts were synthesized by a simple co -precipitation method, and the one -pot upgrading for the transfer hydrogenation of furfural to gamma -valerolactone (GVL) was systematically investigated through various characterizations and catalytic evaluation experiments. Comparative characterization analysis of the ZrP@HB-X (Y) catalysts showed that the ZrP@HB-4(4) catalyst has uniform distribution of elements, exhibiting a large specific surface area and hierarchical mesoporous/microporous structure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of pyridine (Py-FTIR) and NH 3 temperature -programmed desorption characterizations indicated the presence of Lewis and Br & oslash; nsted acid sites, as well as weak, moderate, and strong acid sites in the ZrP@HB-4(4) catalyst. It was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and FTIR that the main reason for Lewis and Br & oslash; nsted acid sites formation is the presence of P-O-Zr, P -O -H, and HB zeolite on the ZrP@HB-4(4) catalyst. The HB zeolite as well as Zr and P ratio, can be easily adjusted to efficiently regulate the acidity strength and Lewis and Br & oslash; nsted acid sites of the ZrP@HB-X(Y) catalysts. The catalytic experiments demonstrated that the physicochemical properties of the ZrP@HB-4(4) catalyst mentioned above significantly enhance the GVL production. Notably, Lewis and Br & oslash; nsted acid sites as well as transition metal sites of Zr in the ZrP@HB-4(4) catalyst were identified as the main factors that enhance the yield of the target product. By optimizing the reaction conditions, the yield of GVL could be as high as 88.16%. Reusability experiments demonstrate that the ZrP@HB-4(4) catalyst possesses excellent stability. Using levulinic acid as the substrate, the yield of GVL reached 93.92%, suggesting its potential versatility.

Abstract :

To achieve high thermal efficiency, today's nuclear reactor structures are exposed to higher temperatures and pressures, which requires the use of high-strength steels with specific properties, such as ODS steels. There is a need to clarify the evolution of the microstructure and properties of steels at elevated temperatures. This study systematically investigates the evolution of microstructure, texture, and mechanical property variations of 12CrODS steels after hot-rolling and subsequent annealing at 1000 degrees C and 1200 degrees C. The investigation utilizes optical microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction technique, and mechanical property measurements. The microstructure of hot-rolled samples shows a layered alternating distribution, which is distinguished by a notable presence of the alpha-fiber texture. Following annealing at 1000 degrees C, the martensite grains are smaller with a reduced hardness, while maintaining a strong alpha-fiber texture. After annealing at 1200 degrees C, there is a rapid increase in the growth of martensite grains, a significant rise in hardness, a reduction in the alpha-fiber texture characteristics, and an improvement in the gamma-fiber texture characteristics. Moreover, the maximum intensity of the alpha-fiber texture diminishes as the annealing temperature increases. The mechanical properties of the samples deteriorated after annealing at 1200 degrees C, which can be attributed to the coarse martensite grains and the texture components containing the {001} cleavage plane dominating the occurrence of brittle cleavage fracture. The 0.1Y sample after annealing at 1000 degrees C exhibits an excellent combination of strength (1458 MPa) and ductility (20.3%), which is owing to the unique heterogeneous grain structure and the evolution of favorable texture.
