Abstract :
Metamaterials (MMs) have become increasingly prominent in terahertz flexible devices. However, bending deformation often alters the structure of the unit, which affects the response performance and stability of MMs. Here, a metal-aperture metamaterial (MA-MM) utilizing the strong coupling effect induced by two resonance modes is innovatively proposed to address the mentioned limitations. Specifically, it is found that the coupling state between multiple resonance modes remains consistent at different bending angles. Under these circumstances, the generated Rabi splitting peak presents stable response performance even under low resonance intensity caused by excessive deformation. The experimental results demonstrate that despite the amplitude of two resonant peaks decreasing significantly by 87.6%, the Q-factor of the Rabi splitting only reduced by 14.8%. Furthermore, armed with the response mode of the Rabi splitting being unaffected by plasma excitation range, the designed MA-MMs are able to maintain constant Q-factors and frequencies on curved surfaces of varying sizes. These findings exhibit the characteristics of electromagnetic response for multi-mode resonance-coupled MAMMs on different curved surfaces, presenting a novel design approach for terahertz flexible functional devices. Abstract :
Structural defects in self-lubricating sliding bearings would lead to local stress concentration and service life reduction. The absence of accurate detection technology for micro defects in self-lubricating coating has seriously limited their application in mechanical equipment. A total variation (TV) fusion terahertz imaging method is proposed toward the unidentifiable micro defect induced by overlapping terahertz echoes. First, a range of indicators is developed to quantify the alterations of signal characteristics in different stages of the defect. Subsequently, the TV fusion based on these indicator images could clearly identify different defects. After that, a multinomial regression model is established through the mathematical relation of defect thicknesses and indicators, thus the defect thickness could be obtained accurately. The experimental results for surface defect detection and internal delamination measurement demonstrate the high accuracy and excellent robustness of the proposed method, making it attractive for defect detection and quality assessment of self-lubricating coating.

Abstract :
Multiple modes resonance provides the possibility of broadband filtering and has great potential applications in terahertz devices, including miniaturized spectrometers, hyperspectral imagers and optical switches in communication systems. However, it is difficult to further expand the bandwidth range due to the inability to stack an infinite number of resonant structures in a finite space. Here, an innovative method is reported for manipulating two localized surface plasmon polaritons (LSPP) modes by multiscale-coupled plasmonic fields to realize broadband filtering at terahertz (THz) frequencies. The interaction between two LSPP modes was verified theoretically and experimentally, exhibiting a prominent Rabi splitting and two peaks with high transmittance. Particularly, broadband filtering is accomplished by utilizing a double-layer structure that can be regarded as a cavity for inducing far-field interference. Experimental result demonstrates that the maximum transmission range of the bilayer metamaterial reaches 0.63 THz. Besides, the two wide bands can be integrated into one broadband through near-field coupling effects. The integration of strong coupling and far-field interference expands the transmission range of the double-layer metamaterial, further enhancing its capability for broadband filtering. This unique approach for manipulating multi-mode plasmonic coupling forges a convenient route for realizing broadband filtering.

Abstract :
As a promising nondestructive testing (NDT) technique with a very adaptive physical modeling of wave transmission process, terahertz technology is used for the detection and characterization of nonpolar materials and the evaluation of layered and/or defective structures. THz-TDS can also be used to perform spectroscopic analysis and detect structural defects in thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) of aero-engines. Although it is generally difficult to measure the structure of the thin oxide layer of the thermal barrier coatings whose thickness is generally lower than 30 g m (the current axial resolution of the THz-TDS cannot exceed 30 g m). We were able to complete the detection of the oxide layer within 1-29 g m through simulation by using the SWT-BP algorithm. In this study, the analysis was performed on real -world samples, the fitting degree of the SWT-BP algorithm reached 0.77, and the minimum prediction error was less than 0.1 g m. The paper also put forward some improvement measures about the experimental results. (c) 2024 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract :
While thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are being sprayed onto aero-engine turbine blades, or while the engine blade is working, high temperatures and strong impact forces will damage TBCs under thermal cycles, resulting in the coating peeling off from the blades. The current method of using ECT, IRT, or another method alone cannot achieve the real-time detection of coating defects with both high precision and high penetration power. Two detection methods, namely, terahertz pulsed imaging (TPI) and optical coherence tomography (OCT), were combined to evaluate typical defects observed in TBCs (including internal debonding cracks, surface high-temperature cracks, and surface etched cracks). The results showed that the OCT system successfully obtained the micron-level axial resolution, but the detection depth of the OCT system was limited. The TPI system achieved a higher penetration depth than OCT-hence, it can be used for the nondestructive detection and evaluation of the internal debonding defects in the sample-but its resolution needs to be improved. Following this conclusion, a method is proposed using TPI and OCT concurrently for the nondestructive testing and quantitative evaluation of TBCs on etched cracks, thus achieving progress both in terms of depth and resolution. In our experiment, defects with a depth of 519 mu m and a width of 100 mu m were measured. The proposed method is suitable for situations where multiple defects in TBC samples of blades need to be detected simultaneously during the working process. When there are defects deep inside the sample, more small cracks on the surface can be evaluated to achieve a combination of depth and accuracy.

Abstract :
Electromagnetic metamaterials feature the capability of squeezing photons into hotspot regions of high intensity near-field enhancement for strong light-matter interaction, underpinning the next generation of emerging biosensors. However, randomly dispersed biomolecules around the hotspots lead to weak interactions. Here, we demonstrate an all-silicon dielectric terahertz metamaterial sensor design capable of passively trapping biomoleculars into the resonant cavities confined with powerful electric field. Specifically, multiple controllable high-quality factor resonances driven by bound states in the continuum (BIC) are realized by employing longitudinal symmetry breaking. The dielectric metamaterial sensor with nearly 15.2 experimental figure-of-merit enabling qualitative and quantitative identification of different amino acids by delivering biomolecules to the hotspots for strong light-matter interactions. It is envisioned that the presented strategy will enlighten highperformance meta-sensors design from microwaves to visible frequencies, and serve as a potential platform for microfluidic sensing, biomolecular capture, and sorting devices.

Abstract :
The planar hybrid metallic microstructured metamaterials can utilize the transverse electromagnetic resonance coupling effect of adjacent resonant units to enhance the absorption bandwidth (ABW), which is widely used in the design of broadband terahertz (THz) absorbers. However, it is difficult to further broaden the ABW since only a limited number of resonant units can be arranged in the 2-D plane. Here, we propose a pyramidal 3-D metamaterial absorber that increases the number of resonances by superimposing metallic dielectric layers with different sizes in the vertical direction. Ultrawideband wave absorption at THz frequencies is realized by longitudinal electromagnetic resonance coupling between the layers of the metamaterial structure. The results show that the 3-D metamaterial achieves more than 90% ultrabroadband absorption in the range of 0.83-2.73 THz with the relative ABW exceeding 106%. In addition, the equivalent circuit model of the absorber is constructed to verify the simulation results. This study provides a novel idea for the design and processing of ultrawideband THz absorbers.

Abstract :
Terahertz metamaterial absorbers (TMAs) have exhibited significant potential in high-speed communication, sensing, and imaging, attributed to their thin thickness and excellent wave-absorbing capabilities. However, traditional sandwich-structured metamaterial (MM) absorbers lack the tunable absorption performance once fabricated, severely limiting their applications. In this article, we propose a tunable TMA by integrating liquid crystal (LC) within the MM as a dielectric layer. By applying a bias electric field, the refractive index of the LC can be changed, thereby achieving the tunable resonant frequency. Particularly, the dual-band absorption and polarization insensitivity is accomplished through a symmetrical porous mesh structure, which can induce double magnetic dipole resonance modes, and this expands the tunable frequency range of the absorber. Simulation results show that the two resonant frequencies can be continuously tuned from 0.266 to 0.294 THz and from 0.358 to 0.394 THz, with a tunability of 9.5% and 9.1%, respectively. This novel design provides an effective method for developing tunable TMAs, holding great significance in advancing the performance of terahertz (THz) devices.

Abstract :
Terahertz (THz) metasurfaces have garnered significant interest in biochemical sensing due to their ability to confine field energy in deep subwavelength areas, dramatically enhancing the light-matter interaction. However, the substrate effect prevalent in conventional metasurfaces prevent the enhanced field penetrating into the substrate from interacting with matter, thereby severely limiting the sensitivity. Here, a 1-D V-shaped THz metasurface using a high refractive index HR-Si prism as an external coupler is reported. Tightly confined spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) modes are excited on its all-metallic surface for strong light-matter interactions. The electric field is highly confined within the V-shaped resonant cavity, without any negative effects from the substrate. Owing to this, the metasurface exhibits outstanding performance in the sensing process with a sensitivity of 0.45 THz/RIU, a quality (Q) factor of 140.1, and a figure of merit (FoM) of 54.9 RIU-1. Crucially, the dynamic modulation of plasmon modes allows for a close match with molecular vibrations, enhancing the characteristic absorption of L-histidine by 33.34-fold. This integrated sensor with metasurfaces and prisms shows great potential for the THz detection of trace molecules.
