Abstract :
Spider silk is a natural biomaterial that has attracted considerable attention because of its exceptional physical and chemical properties. Developing fiber materials that combine high strength and toughness remains a significant challenge, as increasing fiber strength often reduces toughness. However, spider silk achieves an optimal balance of these properties through gelation and stretching of its spinning solution. This remarkable feature has inspired extensive efforts to produce artificial fibers that mimic natural spider silk’s materials, structures, and spinning mechanisms. For decades, researchers have focused on artificially spun recombinant spidroins to replicate the extraordinary mechanical properties of natural spider silk. This paper investigates the relationship between the structure and function of spidroins. It reviews the primary methods for synthesizing spider silk fibers, emphasizing their advantages and limitations. These insights provide a theoretical foundation for the design of artificial protein fibers and spinning equipment. This study addresses the challenges and unresolved issues in the current research. It proposes future directions, advancing our understanding of spidroins fiber production and establishing a foundation for further studies. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Abstract :
The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren is listed as one of the most invasive alien insect pests and the fifth costliest worldwide. Sustainable and long-term management of S. invicta is achievable using natural enemy insects. So far, parasitic Pseudacteon flies (Diptera: Phoridae) are the most studied natural enemies of S. invicta, but their low parasitism rate make eradication of S. invicta very difficult. Natural predators of S. invicta are scarcely reported. In this study, we evaluated the control potential of a natural predator, the golden-spotted tiger beetle, Cosmodela aurulenta (Fabricius) against S. invicta. The theoretical maximum daily predation of C. aurulenta adults to small and large S. invicta workers were 29.1545 and 12.4533, respectively. The predation functional responses of C. aurulenta adults on small and large S. invicta workers fit the Holling's type II predator-prey equation. Intraspecific competition and mutual interference among C. aurulenta adults preying on small and large S. invicta workers were detected. C. aurulenta adults showed obvious preference for small S. invicta workers and rapid self-defense reaction on S. invicta worker attack. When fed on Tenebrio molitor Linnaeus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) larvae, C. aurulenta adults had significantly higher survival rate and reproductive performance than when fed on S. invicta. Our study exploited a natural predator, C. aurulenta, for management of S. invicta and laid a foundation for the mass production of the predator.

Artificial diets applied in the mass-rearing propagation of H. axyridis can improve reproductive ability by optimizing the feeding formula. This study used transcriptome data to investigate the effects of various artificial diets on the growth and development of H. axyridis. Results indicate that spawning increased with the low-fat and JH III-supplemented artificial diet (Diet 3). Furthermore, the highest glycogen content found in Diet 3 was significantly different from the other two groups. Triglyceride content decreased as adult feeding time increased in the three artificial diet groups, with the fastest decrease observed in the low-fat diet (Diet 2). Protein content increased gradually in the high-fat diet (Diet 1) group compared to the other treatment groups. The adults reared on low-fat artificial diets, when compared to those on artificial diets supplemented with juvenile hormones at the transcriptome level, were found to have upregulated genes enriched in ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis, ribosome biogenesis, and the hedgehog signaling pathway. In contrast, the genes upregulated in the latter group were enriched in oxidative phosphorylation, amino acid biosynthesis, and the metabolism of other amino acids. The results suggest that nutritional status significantly affects the growth and development of H. axyridis and has practical implications for the artificial feeding of natural pest enemies.

The disposal of discarded vulcanized natural rubber waste has presented substantial environmental challenges. This study aimed to investigate the degradation of vulcanized natural rubber through the utilization of enriched bacterial consortia with NRE3 derived from the soil. The highest weight loss of 38.84 % was achieved with NRE3 after four weeks of incubation. Additionally, the crosslinking density of rubber decreased by 32.3 % and the tensile strength decreased from 69.1 to 9.5 MPa. SEM analysis revealed the presence of significant cracks and holes on the surface of vulcanized natural rubber. Moreover, FT-IR and XPS analyses demonstrated a decrease in the sulfur (S) and carbon (C) content of the rubber, while the oxygen (O) content increased. The concentration of SO42- in the medium increased from 478.37 to 840.26 mg/L, indicating the collapse of the rubber structure. The NMR and GC-MS findings indicated the presence of degradation products, specifically polyisoprene oligomers and terpenoids. Through high-throughput sequencing analyses, Acinetobacter, Chryseobacterium, Stenotrophomonas and other bacterial were discovered in NRE3. Based on the chemical structure characterizations and molecular analyses, a degradation pathway was proposed. These findings pave a way for utilizing rubberdegrading microorganisms present in soil and contribute to the establishment of a biodegradation method for disposing of vulcanized rubber waste.

Abstract :
Aphids are serious insect pests for agricultural and horticultural crops and may cause the major economic losses. Insecticides used to control aphids have caused environmental pollution and the insecticide residues in agricultural products. A new protease inhibitor gene from bacterium Xenorhabdus bovienii (Xbpi-1) and the protease inhibitor protein expressed by the gene against the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris; Hemiptera: Aphididae) have been reported, however, effects of the PIP on the symbiotic bacteria, Buchnera aphidicola, and gene expression in pea aphids are unknown. By assessing the quantity of B. aphidicola, the primary symbiotic bacterium, in the aphid fed on an artificial diet containing 100 and 500 mu g/mL Xbpi-1, we observed a substantial reduction in its population by 27% and 46%, respectively, as analysed by real-time quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR). Furthermore, the growth of other aphid-associated bacteria was also significantly inhibited by Xbpi-1. To elucidate the mechanisms at the gene level, we conducted transcriptome analysis and identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Subsequent Gene Ontology (GO) analysis of the 213 DEGs shed light on the impact of Xbpi-1 on aphid metabolism processes and gene expression. Notably, the results highlighted several aphid nutrient metabolism pathways affected by Xbpi-1, which are relevant to vector-borne diseases. These pathways encompass crucial factors such as heat shock proteins, cuticle proteins and proteases. The results from this study revealed that the PIP had a novel mechanism against pea aphids by having adverse effects on the primary symbiotic bacteria in pea aphids and affecting aphid gene expression, showing that the PIP may be a promise bioinsecticide for aphid control in the future.

Vertebrate testosterone, an androgen present in the testes, is essential for male fertility. Vertebrate-type steroid hormones have been identified in insects, but their function remains unknown. Insect vitellogenin (Vg) is usually a female-specific protein involved in reproductive processes. However, males of some species, such as the green lacewing Chrysopa pallens , have Vg. Here, we demonstrated that the knockdown of C. pallens male Vg by RNAi significantly shortened the lifespan of males, suppressed the reproduction of post-mating females, and strikingly reduced the abundance of several immune-related compounds, including testosterone. LC-MS/MS revealed that C. pallens male testosterone had the same structure and molecular mass as vertebrate testosterone. Topical testosterone application partially restored the lifespan of Vg -deficient males and the reproduction of post-mating females. These results suggest that vertebrate-type testosterone maintains male longevity and female reproduction under the control of the male Vg in C . pallens .

Abstract :
The ferrite process has been developed to purify wastewater containing heavy metal ions and recycle valuable metals by forming chromium ferrite. However, organic matter has an important influence on the crystallization behavior and stability of chromite synthesized from chromium-containing wastewater. We focused on the in-fluence and effect mechanism of two typical organic acid salts (citrate (CA) and tartrate (TA)) on the process of chromium mineralization. It was found that the presence of organic matter leads to the increase of the residual content of Cr in CA system (0.50 mmol/L) and TA system (0.61 mmol/L) in the solution, and the removal of chromium was mainly due to the surface adsorption of Fe(III) hydrolysate. The decreased crystallinity of mineralized products is ascribed to the completion of organic compounds with Fe(II) and Fe(III), which hinders the formation of ferrite precursors. There was bidentate and monodentate chelation between -COO-and metal ions in the CA system and TA system respectively, which resulted in a stronger affinity between CA and iron. This study provides the underlying mechanism for Cr(III) solid oxidation by the ferrite method in an organic matter environment and is of great significance to prevent and control chromium pollution in the environment.

Cerium is a critical element to modern technologies. Nowadays, its increased applications have led to elevated levels in the environment. Cerium recovery by microorganisms has gained a great deal of attention. Here, our research showed that Bacillus licheniformis could be used to recover Ce3+ from aqueous solution. The adsorption capacity of cerium on this bacterial strain achieved 38.93 mg/g (dry weight) biomass. Adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order rate model, and adsorption isotherm was fitted well with the Freundlich model. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations coupled with X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis revealed a spatial association of Ce with C, N, O, S, and P. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis further suggested that the phosphate and carboxyl groups on the cell surface might be responsible for the adsorption of cerium. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) suggested that cerium initially occurred on the bacterial cell surface as Ce(OH)(3), which was mainly converted to monazite (CePO4) and a small amount of CeO2 overtime. Hydrothermal treatment was used to accelerate the mineralization process of cerium by B. licheniformis. The hydrothermal treatment is conducted for comparative analysis of mineralization process in extreme geological condition.

为解决具有不确定性柔性基、柔性关节空间机械臂的控制问题,提出一种自适应鲁棒终端滑模控制与自适应最优控制相结合的混合控制方案。首先,利用奇异摄动法将系统降阶为慢变子系统及快变子系统;其次,针对慢变系统设计一种由等效控制、鲁棒控制及自适应调节算法组成的轨迹跟踪自适应鲁棒终端滑模控制方案;之后,针对快变系统设计一类基于自适应状态观测的振动最优控制策略。仿真结果表明所提方案在系统刚性、柔性运动控制上的有效性。
