Abstract :
Human error, as a major accident causal factor, can trigger an storage tank fire accident and delay the activation of active protection. In this work, a domino-human intervention model was proposed to assess the effect of human reliability on domino fire accidents. The optimized cognitive reliability and error analysis method (CREAM) was constructed to calculate the human error probability (HEP). The dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) of the domino-human intervention model was constructed by the probability of fire escalation and HEP. Among them, the analyzed network includes an initial accident scenario and a safety barrier protection scenario. Lastly, the domino-human intervention model was applied in a case study. The application of the model is validated in the case study, which confirms that HEP can reduce storage tank safety, as well as have a delayed effect on active protection. The proposed model will serve as an assessment tool for the effect of human reliability on domino accidents.

Abstract :
Flame outward radiation plays a crucial role in the risk assessment and the firefighting guidance for accidents involving multiple pool fires. However, current research primarily focuses on single pool fires, with limited studies conducted on multiple pool fires due to the complex interactions between flames. The objective of this paper is to enhance the comprehension of flame radiation from multiple pool fires, and to provide support in risk assessment during such accidents. This study presents an experimental investigation into the flame outward radiation characteristics of multiple pool fires using identical round pools (20 cm diameter) fueled with n-heptane as fire sources. A series of experiments involving double and triple pool fires were conducted by manipulating the spacing and number of fire sources. The results indicate that the flame tilt angle of multiple pool fires increases first and then stabilizes as spacing decreases. The temperature distribution observed in non-tilting flames resembles the classical plume temperature distribution observed in single fires. Furthermore, a temperature distribution expression considering the tilt angle is established for tilting flames. Finally, a weighted multi-point source radiation calculation model for multiple pool fires is proposed, where the weights are determined based on the product of quartic flame temperature and emissivity to account for different point sources' contributions. Comparisons against other models are performed using experimental data to verify the accuracy. This work presents a novel simplified approach for quantifying flame radiation emitted from multiple pool fires. © 2024

Abstract :
Urban gas pipeline networks (UGPN) provide important support for high-quality urbanization. Therefore, it is imperative to analyze and assess the potential failures of UGPN. A novel probabilistic analysis method is proposed for assessing the safety and resilience of UGPN. Firstly, Bow-Tie analysis is used to identify faults. Then, a four-dimensional resilience assessment network is developed. Bayesian network is utilized to model the relationship between the variables, while dynamic Bayesian network is used to consider the dynamic nature of the system. The results of the study show that the proposed model can accurately estimate faults, consequences, and influence paths. Furthermore, the resilience analysis shows that monitoring the objective conditions is crucial and that the initial failure probability of the UGPN decreases from 0.03767 % to 0.01435 % when connected to a resilience network, indicating that considering resilience can effectively improve the reliability and safety of the UGPN. Two application examples are presented in the paper to validate the functionality of the proposed model. The proposed model can be used to set the state of UGPN to predict the probability of occurrence of a specific event and its consequences and to simulate the improvement trend of UGPN based on the direction of focus of future work. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract :
The occurrence of urban gas pipeline network accidents will pose a great threat to people's lives and property. To protect the lives and property of urban residents and ensure the normal operation of the city, this paper studied the influencing factors of urban gas pipeline network accidents. Firstly, the influencing factors of urban gas pipeline network accidents were summarized and the corresponding fishbone diagram was constructed following the data from the U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. Secondly, based on the determined accident number model, the corresponding Bayesian network model was constructed to calculate the state probability and the sensitivity value. Finally, according to the relevant information of urban gas pipeline network management, combined with the numerical results of priori probability and sensitivity, an emergency linkage system based on the urban gas pipeline network was constructed. The calculation results of state probability and the sensitivity analysis indicate that corrosion is the most influential factor contributing to accidents in the urban gas pipeline network. The temperature change has the greatest influence on the occurrence of urban gas pipeline network accidents. Special attention should be paid to the prevention and management of these two aspects of the emergency linkage system. Besides, in order to verify the effectiveness of the system, this paper also uses AHP to evaluate the application of the system. This study aims to provide valuable insights for enhancing the safety management of urban gas pipeline networks, thereby elevating their safety management standards. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract :
Pool fires are the most prevalent accidents in the process industry. Revealing the physical mechanism of pool fire has both fundamental and practical applications in process safety and risk analysis. This paper intends to study the radiation blockage phenomenon caused by fuel vapor and flame in pool fires. Combustion and evaporation (non-combustion) experiments under different external radiative heat fluxes have been conducted to differentiate the radiation blockage of the fuel vapor and the flame. Four different sooting fuels including methanol, ethanol, n-heptane and toluene were used in the experiments. The radiation blockage of fuel vapor was determined through evaporation experiments. The radiation blockage of flame and the total radiation blockage of pool fires were investigated by burning experiments. Based on the assumptions of radiation gray for flame radiation and external radiation, the effective radiation blockage was determined. It is found that the effective radiation blockage coefficient of the fuel vapor increases with fuel mass flux first, and then gradually approaches a constant value because the radiation absorption capacity of the fuel vapor tends to saturate with the increase of fuel mass flux. The correlations between the fuel vapor radiation blockage coefficient and fuel mass flux are established based on theoretical analysis and experimental data. Moreover, the flame blockage coefficient decreases with external radiation for methanol, ethanol and n-heptane because the fire expands, causing enhanced radiative heat feedback from the flame. For the heavily sooting fuel, toluene, the flame radiation blockage almost remains constant with external radiation due to high soot concentrations.

Abstract :
Forest fires will do great harm to the ecological environment. At present, the most important research field is the study of the causes of forest fires, and the failure to determine the causes will greatly hinder the prevention, control and safety management of forest fires. In order to solve this problem, this paper constructs a Bayesian network to calculate the state probability and sensitivity after determining the factors related to forest fire. Secondly, on the basis of constructing Bayesian network, the Bow-tie model is constructed according to the consequences of forest fire. The constructed Bow-tie model contains 7 influencing factors and 5 consequences, and 26 corresponding control measures. Finally, through the analysis of Bayesian network and bow tie model, the forest fire prevention system is constructed. According to the calculation results of the Bayesian network, the probability of forest fires being at high risk of occurrence is higher for three factors: agriculture, forestry and water expenditure, rural population density and precipitation. Changes in rural population density and humidity have the greatest impact on the occurrence of forest fires. In combination with the Bow-tie model, human factors are the most important factors leading to the occurrence of forest fires, and the material, environmental, and management factors are the secondary factors. Based on the forest control system, the prevention and management measures are put forward. This research can provide reference for the control of forest fire and reduce the occurrence of similar forest fires.
