Abstract :
With the global population projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, pressure on global natural resources will increase by 50-90%, exceeding planetary boundaries. Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies are widely considered feasible for resolving the conflict between population growth and natural resources. However, their adoption by the agri-food industry has been slower than in manufacturing and automotives. Their fragmented, noncomprehensive, and atheoretical nature of scholarly research relating to I4.0 and the circular economy (CE) impede practitioners' deeper understanding. Grounded in grand theory, we analyze enablers of I4.0 deployment to achieve CE in agri-food supply chains (AFSCs). We thematically analyze data collected from 32 Chinese AFSC practitioners through semi-structured interviews to identify 27 enablers. We then implement a group-based fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (GFAHP) to prioritize these enablers based on the opinions of 10 decision makers. Our results differ from most existing studies. First, we find that AFSCs' successful deployment of I4.0-enabled CE depends on the collective efforts of environmental factors, supply chains, organizations, and individuals. China's hierarchical cultural value orientation is the "lubricant" linking these factors to achieve synergies. Second, our prioritization results show that success depends heavily on environmental factors and organizations, and relatively little on supply chains and individuals. Enablers such as willingness to learn new knowledge, knowledge of I4.0 and CE, rural revitalization policy, new infrastructure construction policy, and enhanced digital skills are prioritized amongst the 27 identified enablers. This study has limitations, such as generalizability, that should be addressed in future research.

Abstract :
PurposeFood sustainability is a world-acknowledged issue that requires urgent integrated solutions at multi-levels. This study aims to explore how food firms can improve their sustainability performance through digital traceability practices, considering the mediating effect of sustainability-oriented innovation (SOI) and the moderating effect of supply chain learning (SCL) for the food supply chain therein.Design/methodology/approachHierarchical regression with a moderated mediation model is used to test the proposed hypotheses with a sample of 359 food firms from four provinces in China.FindingsDigital traceability has a significant positive impact on the three pillars of sustainability performances among food firms. SOI (product innovation, process innovation and organisational innovation) mediates the relationship between digital traceability and sustainability performance. SCL plays moderating roles in the linkage between digital traceability and both product and process innovation, respectively.Originality/valueThis paper contributes as one of the first studies to develop digital traceability practices and their sustainability-related improvements for Chinese food firms; it extends studies on supply chain traceability to a typical emerging market. This finding can support food sustainability practice in terms of where and how to invest in sustainability innovation and how to improve economic, environmental and social performance.

Abstract :
Whether and how manufacturing firms can enhance their overall sustainability performance through the implementation of circular procurement management is still unclear and under-researched. Drawing on the socio-technical systems theory, this study develops a theoretical model and explores the potential impacts of circular procurement management on manufacturing firms' sustainability performance (i.e., economic, environmental, and social performance) while examining the moderating role of digital traceability and collaboration. Based on survey data from 250 Chinese circular economy manufacturing firms, this study uses hierarchical regression to analyze the impact mechanism and boundary of circular procurement management on sustainability performance. The empirical results show that (1) Circular procurement management in manufacturing firms can significantly improve economic, environmental, and social performance; (2) Digital traceability positively moderates the effect of circular procurement management on both environmental and social performance; (3) Collaboration positively moderates the effect of circular procurement management on both economic and environmental performance; and (4) The impact of circular procurement management on environmental performance is positively and interactively moderated by digital traceability and collaboration.

Abstract :
Sustainability issues in the food industry have been witnessed to impact on public stability, human health and living standards in the past decades. Practitioners and academia have raised attention to develop supply chain traceability (SCT) in the context of Industry 4.0 technologies in order to improve operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Drawing on the extended knowledge-based view, this study has collected 303 questionnaire surveys to test the impact of SCT practices on improving food manufacturers' sustainability performance, addressing on the economic, environmental and social sustainability, with consideration of knowledge integration and environmental dynamism. Our results show that: (1) SCT has a significant positive impact on the three pillars of sustainability performances among food manufacturers. (2) Knowledge integration mediates the relationship between SCT and sustainability performance; (3) Environmental dynamism plays a moderating role in the direct path between SCT and social performance. This study contributes new theoretical insights to highlight knowledge integration in support of traceback investigation for improving sustainability performance a dynamic environment. The results make substantial contributions on better implementation of sustainable food supply chain, to enhance operations and supply chain practices in the food chain, and to support government policymaking in an environmental dynamic context.
