High efficiency dye adsorption and oil–water separation of aminated-SiO2 decorated monolayer Ti3C2Tx MXene EI

Abstract :

The rapid growth of industries and population has led to severe water pollution, especially from the oil and dyes pollution. Recently, MXene with hydrophilicity layer structure and excellent adsorption capacity has been regarded as a promising material for high efficiency dye adsorption and oil–water separation. In this study, aminated-SiO2 nanorods and monolayer Ti3C2Tx MXene were combined by a facile self-assembly method to prepare a new composite (NSx/MXene) for dye adsorption and oil–water separation. The results show that the adsorption capacity of the NSx/MXene composite was enhanced due to the introduction of aminated-SiO2 nanorods with more active sites. Especially, the NS2/MXene composite has a maximum adsorption capacity up to 4532.5 mg g−1 for AB74 dye, which is attributed to the electrostatic interaction between NS2/MXene and AB74 dye molecules. In addition, NS2/MXene modified polyurethane sponge (NS2/MXene@PU) was prepared by immersing dried polyurethane (PU) sponge in the NS2/MXene suspension. The NS2/MXene@PU sponge has a characteristic of superhydrophilicity in air and superoleophobicity in water, and shows a high separation flux of 27.44 × 104 L m−2 h−1 for a cyclohexane-water mixture. After 30 cycle experiments, the separation flux of NS2/MXene@PU for the cyclohexane-water mixture can still be 21.66 × 104 L m−2 h−1, indicating an excellent cycling stability of NS2/MXene@PU. Hence, this new NS2/MXene material has excellent application prospects in dye adsorption and oil–water separation. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract :

Water-based biocarbon as an electrode material of supercapacitor for energy storage equipment has been widely studied because of its simple preparation, low cost, environmental friendliness and good cycle stability, but its low specific capacitance and energy density are the keys to hinder its development. In this study, 2D biocarbon nanosheets from kapok fibers were prepared via KOH activation. ACKF-2, an as-prepared activated biocarbon with an alkali-carbon mass ratio of 5:1, had a very high specific surface area of 3359.2 m2/g and a high pore volume of 2.1415 m3/g. Thus, ACKF-2 exhibits a high specific capacitance of 405 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g in a 6 mol/L KOH electrolyte. To further improve the electrochemical performance of ACKF-2, two redox additives, K3Fe(CN)6 and K4Fe(CN)6, were chosen as novel redox electrolytes. At a current density of 10 A/g, ACKF-2 showed a superhigh specific capacitance of 3380 F/g in the 1 mol/L H2SO4 electrolyte with adding K3Fe(CN)6 and K4Fe(CN)6. A symmetrical-supercapacitor device consisting of ACKF-2 and the new-type redox electrolyte can achieve an extremely high energy density of 264.1 Wh/kg at a high power density of 4593 W/kg. Therefore, this study provides a new energy storage scheme that can greatly improve the water-based carbon supercapacitor.

Abstract :

The intensification of industrial production has led to a sharp increase in the discharge of toxic organic chemicals and wastewater from printing and dyeing industry. In this study, flower-like ZnO modified TiO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x composites (ZnO/TiO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x ) were prepared by in -situ oxidation solvothermal method from zinc nitrate hexahydrate and tetramethylammonium hydroxide intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T x . During the solvothermal processes, sodium hydroxide acted as an etchant to further exfoliated the accordion -like Ti 3 C 2 T x into single or few -layer; and at the same time, TiO 2 was formed in -situ on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x with simultaneous deposition of flower-like ZnO. The layer structural Ti 3 C 2 T x facilitates the loading and dispersion of ZnO and TiO 2 on its surface. After the in -situ oxidation by solvothermal method, TiO 2 was evenly distributed on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x , adjusting the functional groups on the surface of the ZnO/TiO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x composite, and improving its adsorption performance. ZnO/TiO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x can be used as an efficient adsorbent for malachite green with a high maximum adsorption capacity of 1232.7 mg g -1 , which is higher than that of TiO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x (628.57 mg g -1 ). Moreover, a superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic ZnO/TiO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x @PU sponge was prepared by loading ZnO/TiO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x onto polyurethane (PU) sponge. The introduction of ZnO enhances the surface roughness of the ZnO/TiO 2 @Ti 3 C 2 T x @PU sponge, which can effectively separate six oil -water mixtures, and has a high separation flux of 171784 L m - 2 h -1 and separation efficiency of 99.6% for cyclohexane-water mixture.

Abstract :

Poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is an electrically conductive polymer that is highly conductive and oxidatively stable. However, its poor cycling stability and small specific capacitance limit its application as an electrode material for supercapacitors. In this work, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) modified V-Ti3C2Tx/poly(3,4ethylenedioxythiophene) composite (CVT/PEDOT) was prepared by obtaining vanadium-doped Ti3C2Tx (VTi3C2Tx) using a simple hydrothermal method, and then polymerizing 3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene monomers (EDOT) on the surface of carbon nanotubes modified V-Ti3C2Tx. The incorporation of CNTs with V-Ti3C2Tx results in better stability of CVT/PEDOT. The synergistic effect of the three components make the CVT/PEDOT composite have good electrochemical performance and excellent cycling stability as an electrode material for supercapacitor. The specific capacitance of CVT/PEDOT at a current density of 1 A g- 1 is up to 263 F g- 1, and the capacitance retention is 86 % after 5000 cycles at a current density of 10 A g- 1, which is superior to that of the VTi3C2Tx/PEDOT composite. The energy density of CVT/PEDOT is 15.26 Wh kg- 1 at a power density of 600 W kg- 1, which is higher than those of previously reported PEDOTs and other PEDOT-based composites. So, the CVT/PEDOT composite can be a potential candidate for electrode materials of supercapacitor.

Abstract :

Nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) has received much attention in the field of supercapacitor electrodes due to its multiple oxidation states and good electrochemical activity. However, NiCo-LDH often suffers from structural instability and low conductivity in practical applications. In this study, sea urchin-like structural NiCo-LDH coated cobalt-nitrogen co-doped carbon (NiCo-LDH@Co-NC-x) electrode materials were prepared by in situ growth of NiCo-LDH on the surface of cobalt-nitrogen co-doped carbon nanosheets (Co-NC) using a one-step hydrothermal method. The results show that the NiCo-LDH@Co-NC-2 electrode material exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, its specific capacitance is up to 1909 F g- 1 at a current density of 1 A g- 1, and capacitance retention of 69.5 % (only 26.2 % for NiCo-LDH) can be achieved after 10,000 cycles at a current density of 10 A g- 1. This is because the abundant and uniformly distributed Co nanoparticles on Co-NC provide nucleation sites for the in-situ growth of NiCo-LDH, effectively improving the interface binding between Co-NC and NiCo-LDH, enhancing the structural stability of NiCo-LDH, and ensuring highly efficient electron transport throughout the NiCo-LDH@Co-NC-2 electrode. An asymmetric supercapacitor (NiCo-LDH@Co-NC-2// AC) was further assembled with NiCo-LDH@Co-NC-2 and activated carbon (AC) as positive and negative electrodes, respectively, achieving an energy density as high as 36.8 Wh kg- 1 at a power density of 750 W kg- 1. These findings suggest that the NiCo-LDH@Co-NC-2 composite can be a promising candidate for highperformance supercapacitor electrode.

Abstract :

Electrocatalytic hydrogen production is an effective way to produce hydrogen energy, and the key is to find inexpensive and effective catalysts. Loading transition metal sulfides onto two-dimensional transition metal carbide (MXene) is an effective method to prepare cheap and high-performance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. In this study, Mo2TiAlC2 was etched with hydrofluoric acid to prepare Mo2TiC2Tx MXene, which was then composited with MoS2 and CoS2 to prepare defect-rich MoS2/CoS2@Mo2TiC2Tx composite by a hydrothermal method. MoS2/CoS2 provides a large number of active sites for electrocatalysis, while Mo2TiC2Tx MXene as a carrier not only provides nucleation and growth sites for MoS2/CoS2, but also increases the rate of electron transfer in HER process, which achieves good synergy between MoS2/CoS2 and Mo2TiC2Tx MXene. Consequently, MoS2/CoS2-2@Mo2TiC2Tx exhibits an excellent HER performance. When the current density reaches 10 mA cm-2, the optimal MoS2/CoS2-2@Mo2TiC2Tx catalyst only requires an overpotential of 80 mV, and exhibits good cycling stability and durability. This work gives a new idea for the preparation of efficient HER catalysts using non-precious metal composites to replace the precious Pt/C.

Abstract :

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has a Gibbs free energy comparable to platinum (Pt), suggesting it can replace Pt as a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst. However, the shortcomings of the restricted number of MoS2 active sites and poor intrinsic electrical conductivity have resulted in impeding its widespread application. In this work, Co/MoS2@NPC electrocatalyst was prepared by using nitrogen-doped porous carbon (NPC) as a substrate material, and then hydrothermally anchoring cobalt-doped molybdenum disulfide (Co-doped MoS2) on the substrate. Co/MoS2@NPC was subsequently applied to hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic and alkaline media. It was found that the overpotential of 0.2Co/MoS2@NPC was only 139 mV for HER at 10 mA cm (-2) with a Tafel slope of 69 mV dec (-1) in acidic medium; while in alkaline medium, its overpotential was 163 mV with a Tafel slope of 106 mV dec (-1), and it operated stably over 10 h. The superior HER performance may be related to the point that NPC as a substrate can uniformly disperse MoS2, exposing more active sites and ensuring high electronic conductivity of MoS2. In addition, the introduction of Co into MoS2 changed the intrinsic activity of MoS2 and interacted with CoSx and pyridine nitrogen in NPC, constituting a ternary catalytic interaction. Therefore, this study provides a novel strategy for optimizing the HER activity of MoS2.

Abstract :

Over-exploitation of fossil energy has led to the formation of enormous amounts of oily wastewater, which is increasingly polluting the environment of water bodies. The Ti3C2Tx-modified separation ma-terial is limited by surface roughness and surface chemical composition, and the permeation flux de-creases significantly during continuous testing. In this study, silver-loaded polydopamine nanospheres (nano-AgPNPs) as antioxidants were prepared by in-situ reduction from Ag+ ions and polydopamine nanospheres, and then they self-assembled with Ti3C2Tx nanosheets to obtain hierarchical micro-nano structural nano-AgPNPs modified Ti3C2Tx [(AgPNPs)xT ( x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1)]. Because of their strong reduction properties, nano-AgPNPs antioxidants can effectively protect the active edges of Ti3C2Tx from dissolved oxygen, and greatly improve the oxidation resistance of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets, with no signif-icant changes in morphology and physical phase after long-term placement. (AgPNPs)xT formed un-derwater oleophobic interfaces with the hierarchical structure on polyurethane (PU) sponge to prepare (AgPNPs)xT@PU separation sponges. Among them, (AgPNPs)0.5T@PU sponge showed the highest compre-hensive performance with separation efficiency higher than 99.6% for various oil-water mixtures, espe-cially high-throughput and permeation flux up to 247,787 L m-2 h-1 for cyclohexane-water mixtures. In addition, nano-AgPNPs greatly broadened the layer spacing of Ti3C2Tx and can form a functionalized in-terface of modified Ti3C2Tx on polyamide (PA) membrane and provide additional permeation channels, which enabled the (AgPNPs)0.5T@PA membrane to have excellent toluene-water emulsion separation effi-ciency up to 99.6%.(c) 2023 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of The editorial office of Journal of Materials Science & Technology.
