Dynamic Collision Alert System for Collaboration of Construction Equipment and Workers SCIE
期刊论文 | 2025 , 15 (1) | BUILDINGS
Abstract&Keyword Cite Version(2)

Abstract :

The construction industry is considered one of the most hazardous industries. The accidents associated with construction equipment are a leading cause of fatalities in the U.S., with one-quarter of all fatalities in the construction industry due to equipment-related incidents, including collisions, struck-by events, and rollovers. While close collaboration among multiple equipment and humans is common, conventional collision alert mechanisms for equipment usually rely on distance sensors with static thresholds, often resulting in too many false alarms, causing drivers' ignorance. Considering the collaborative operation scenario, this research proposes and develops a dynamic-threshold alert system by recognizing hazardous events based on the types of nearby objects with their orientation or postures and their distances to the system carrier equipment based on image-based recognition and Sim2Real techniques. Two experiments were conducted, and the results show that the system successfully reduced a large number of false near-collision alarms for the collaboration scenarios. Although the accuracy of object recognition and image-based distance estimation is feasible for practical use, it is also easily degraded in the self-obstruction scenario or for equipment with large and movable parts due to incorrect recognition of the bounding boxes of the target objects.

Abstract :

Abstract :

This study investigates the flexural behavior of the large prestressed UHPC box girder. An overpass carrying a section of the Shijiazhuang-Ci County Expressway in Hebei Province is used as a case. A 30 m-long full-scale prestressed UHPC box girder mock-up was prepared for the four-point flextural tests, together with the finite element calculation, the findings of the tests as well as multiple key factors were analyzed, including crack distribution, midspan load-dispalcement curve, UHPC in tensile zone, and the stress-strain curves of the tendons. In the flexural tests, the UHPC in the compressive zone was not crushed when the box girder fractured, the steel fibers were pulled out in the tensile zone, and the cracks propagated through the bottom slabs of the box girder. The load-displacement curves indicate that the box girder experienced four stages during the test, including the elastic stage, the crack propagation stage, the crack rapid propagation stage and failure stage. It can be seen from the stress-strain curves that the UHPC in the tensile zone still contributes tensile stress even when the longitudinal tendons were yielded. The findings in the flexural tests and the measured mechanical property indexes all proved that there was large flexural performance margin of the prestressed UHPC, which can be further optimized. The optimization of the prestressed UHPC box girder was performed considering the amount of common reinforcing bars, prestressing tenons amount, web thickness and bottom slab thickness. It is shown that the UHPC box gider with no normal reinforcement still meets the design requirements of ultimate limit state. Increasing the number of prestressing tendons in the bottom slabs can effectively enhance the compressive strength utilization rate of the UHPC in compression zones. The web thickness should be kept within proper range, thinner webs arc more likely to succumb to oversized principal tensile stress, thus better being no less than 8 cm. Adding external prestressing tendons arc associated with the reduction of the thickness of bottom slabs of the box gider. © 2024 Wuhan Bridge Media Co., Ltd., MBEC. All rights reserved.

Abstract :

For through tied-arch bridges, the corrosion and degradation of the cable's load-bearing capacity are the main external causes of cable breakage and subsequent structural failure; nevertheless, the progressive collapse after cable breakage is primarily attributed to the weak structural robustness, which makes a huge potential risk of bridge operation and maintenance (O & M). Whereas, as the basis of O & M, current condition evaluation method has not yet taken into consideration the influence of different consequences of cable breakage, resulting in unscientific conclusions for O & M decisions frequently. In this study, a robustness-based condition evaluation framework for the overall structure of the through tied-arch bridge is presented, consisting of three stages: (1) structural robustness assessment associated with tie-bar and suspender failure respectively; (2) classification of evaluation process by the results of robustness assessment, within which the overall structure is either evaluated using the code method or evaluated directly as unqualified (Condition I and II), or the structural member weightings are adjusted according to the robustness weightings (Condition III); and (3) condition evaluation of entire bridge. The evaluation processes of three conditions are further presented in accordance with the tied-arch structure and suspended deck system. To establish the robustness weightings in Condition III, the safety redundancy indexes of through tied-arch structures as well as the suspended deck system are calculated separately, combined with robustness assessment result. Applying the proposed framework to evaluating the condition of a through tied-arch bridge with different structures, the analysis and comparison indicates that, due to the robustness of the through tied-arch structure and suspended deck system, the variation in the potential risk of accidents induced by cable failure is shown intuitively through the evaluation results, which better meets the needs of guiding bridge O & M decisions consequently.

Abstract :

Compared with those of other bridge types, the structural system of through tied-arch bridges is particularly susceptible to failure owing to the deterioration and fracturing of tie-bars as well as a lack of structural robustness, which are the main internal and external causes of progressive collapse accidents, respectively. In particular, low structural robustness strongly influences the severity of accidents induced by tie-bar breakage. To objectively reflect the possible failure mode induced by tie-bar failure and to provide improved structural robustness in through tied-arch bridges, within which the suspended deck system is relatively independent, a robustness assessment framework considering tie-bar failure is proposed in this study, by considering the design and maintenance essentials. First, the main analysis parameters for the extreme-event limit state considering tie-bar failure are put forward, including the critical tie-bar failure rate, partial factor for load effects, transverse reduction factor of multilane loading, dynamic magnification factor of material strength, and reduction factors of residual strength. Second, the quantitative assessment index of structural robustness I-T,I-rob is proposed based on the safety redundancy of the remaining structural members, and robustness assessment rules are put forward in accordance with the different calculation results of I-T,I-rob and horizontal displacement. A typical rigid-framed through tied-arch bridges is assessed using the proposed framework. The assessment results reveal that multiple fortifications against extreme events of tie-bar failure can be established by designing the tie-bars and the piers with sufficient safety features to form the first and final line of defense against the tie-bar breakage effect. Moreover, proper maintenance should be conducted to guarantee the structural robustness of bridges in use. The methodology is well suited for the design of new through tied-arch bridges and to access the robustness of existing bridges to ensure the safety of transportation services.

Condition evaluation for through and half-through arch bridges considering robustness of suspended deck systems SCIE

Abstract :

Through and half-through arch bridges is one of the main bridge types in China, having arch ribs and simple suspended deck systems, which are connected by high-strength wire suspenders. However, due to the lack of robustness, the suspended deck systems of these types of bridges caused progressive collapse after the suspender corrosion damage. In this study, the internal structural factor of progressive collapse induced by suspender failure was revealed by comparison of five cases of suspender failure, and the robustness requirement of the suspended deck systems was proposed as redundancy to avoid transverse beam collapse when two supporting suspenders on both ends were broken at the same time. Meanwhile, a typical rigid-framed tied through concrete-filled steel tube arch bridge was investigated, and structural condition evaluation was carried out based on the Chinese standard (JTG/T H21-2011). It was found that the evaluation results of bridges with different deck systems were unreasonable, as the better the robustness was, the worse the condition of the deck system was rated, which would mislead the bridge maintenance decisions. A robustness-based evaluation method was then proposed by adopting different evaluation method according to the robustness of the suspended deck system, which is determined by qualitative classification or quantitative calculation. In addition, weight-adjusting method considering robustness was introduced in the evaluation process. The result showed that the new method could objectively reflect the condition of the bridge and thus fits the needs of bridge maintenance and management better.

Dynamic Effect of Tie-Bar Failure on Through Tied Arch Bridge SCIE

Abstract :

Tie bars on through tied arch bridges are often in poor condition and may serve as an external cause of a tie-bar failure accident; nevertheless, bridge structural robustness contributes greatly in resisting progressive collapse, and poor robustness tends to be the essential internal cause of possible accident. To study the dynamic effect of tie-bar failure of a through tied arch bridge and to reveal the mechanism of how structural robustness reduces dynamic effects, a finite-element model of a typical rigid-frame through tied arch bridge is developed based on the most adverse tie-bar breaking time, a transient-unloading method with equivalent load is adopted to analyze the dynamic response of tie-bar failure, and the results under different working conditions are compared. Furthermore, parameter analysis of the arch-to-pier stiffness ratio is conducted for the dynamic-amplification effect. The results indicate that both the pier and the arch rib have significant dynamic-amplification effects with respect to tie-bar breakage, and the remaining tie bars are the most vulnerable elements of the bridge; thus, they should be considered the most important elements when conducting tie-bar failure analysis; the most adverse breaking time adopted in cable breakage analysis can be taken as 0.01 T; a greater arch-to-pier stiffness ratio is beneficial to reduce the dynamic response brought on by tie-bar breakage; therefore, a rigid-frame through tied arch bridge should be designed with a large pier thrust stiffness, while a simply supported tied arch bridge should not be used in future through arch bridges, and existing ones should be retrofitted as soon as possible.
