Abstract :
Structural modal identification is generally implemented within a dynamic framework, requiring multidisciplinary knowledge and adequate operational experience. This preliminary study attempts to explore an easy-to-handle quasi-static alternative method for dynamics-based modal identification of beam-type structures. Acceleration time-history data are replaced by quasi-static deflections induced by slow moving loads. A concept of quasi-static deflection influence surface is proposed based on the theory of influence lines and the principle of virtual work. Its analytical expression is simplified into a deflection matrix by choosing specific points on the surface according to deflection measurement coordinates. The matrix form is divided by external loads to obtain a generalised quasi-static flexibility matrix, which is used to replace the inversion of the global stiffness matrix in the modal eigenvalue equation. The lumped-mass method is also employed to establish the mass matrix. Subsequently, the eigenvalue equation is analytically solved seeking for modal frequencies and mode shapeswithout performing modal tests. The feasibility of the proposed method has been successfully verified against three experimental examples including a continuous box girder with variable cross sections. It was observed that the modal frequencies and mode shapes estimated by the proposed method were very close to those given by the dynamically modal tests.

Abstract :
Structural health monitoring (SHM) data have a large volume, increasing the cost of data storage and transmission and the difficulties of structural parameter identification. The compressed sensing (CS) theory provides a signal acquisition and analysis strategy. Signal reconstruction using limited measurements and CS has attracted significant interest. However, the dynamic responses obtained from civil engineering structures contain noise, resulting in sparse samples and reducing the signal reconstruction accuracy. Therefore, we propose an optimization algorithm for the measurement matrix integrating the Karhunen-Loeve transform (KLT) and approximate QR decomposition (KLT-QR) to improve the accuracy of dynamic response reconstruction of SHM data. The KLT reduces the correlation between the measurement matrix and the sparse basis. The approximate QR decomposition is used to improve the independence between the column vectors of the measurement matrix, optimizing the measurement matrix. The experimental results for a laboratory steel beam indicate that the proposed KLT-QR algorithm outperforms three other algorithms regarding the accuracy of dynamic response reconstruction (acceleration, displacement, and strain), especially at high compression ratios. The acceleration responses from the Ji'an Bridge are utilized to verify the advantages of the proposed algorithm. The results demonstrate that the KLT-QR algorithm has the highest accuracy of reconstructing the vibration signals and yields better Fourier spectra than the conventional Gaussian measurement matrix.

如何从土木结构响应数据中挖掘损伤特征并有效分类,是实现损伤模式识别的关键.为此,以框架结构为分析对象,搭建设有自编码器隐藏层和Softmax分类层的栈式自编码器网络,采用无监督联合有监督的混合学习机制;基于有限元分析获取框架不同工况下的传递比函数值,构建训练集、验证集和测试集样本;通过预训练确定自编码器隐藏层的参数值如权重和偏置值,避免网络出现过拟合;采用微调方式进一步调整预训练后的网络参数值,再结合验证集实现对网络超参数的调整;将实测传递比数据输入网络,实现对框架节点损伤的评估.结果表明:所提方法能有效进行损伤特征的提取和分类,准确识别框架节点的单、双损伤工况,相较于传统浅层神经网络具有更高的识别准确度和更好的抗噪性.

桥梁结构实时健康监测中存在因为海量数据导致的数据传输和存储成本大的问题,而压缩感知理论的提出为解决该问题提供了全新的思路。压缩感知理论与传统的Nyquist采样定理相比,优势在于它可以实现用少量的采样数据恢复较为准确的原始信号。然而,恢复原始信号是一个病态逆向问题,因此如何求解这个病态逆向问题和提高压缩感知信号重构的精度引起了许多学者的关注。本文融合Karhunen-Loeve (K-L)变换和近似正交三角(QR)分解来优化压缩感知理论中的观测矩阵,增大观测矩阵列向量之间独立性的同时减小观测矩阵与稀疏基之间的相关性,以满足感知矩阵需具备有限等距性质(Restricted Isometry Property,RIP)的要求,从而提高振动响应信号压缩感知重构的精度和效率。以吉安大桥的环境振动试验加速度动力响应信号为研究对象,进行压缩感知信号重构分析。分析结果表明所提的观测矩阵优化方法相比单独使用K-L变换和近似QR分解优化观测矩阵,可得到更高精度的重构响应信号,且具有更简便和高效的优点;压缩感知重构信号不论在时域还是在频域,其精度均高于未优化观测矩阵重构的结果,重构的信号与原始信号吻合良好。

Abstract :
An artificial fish swarm algorithm based on Pareto multi-objective optimization is proposed for optimal sensor placement in structural health monitoring. The modal independence, damage sensitivity and damage redundancy are firstly utilized to establish the sensor multi-objective optimization function. Then the rear-end and foraging behaviors in the artificial fish swarm algorithm are improved, and the external file sets are introduced for the centralized processing of the mutually non-dominating solutions in the optimization process. The Pareto solution with the closest Euclidean distance at the ideal point is considered as the final optimal solution. A planar frame structure is finally used as a numerical study to verify the proposed artificial fish swarm algorithm based on Pareto multi-objective optimization for sensor optimal placement. The results obtained from the proposed method give a fairly uniform spacing for the sensor locations, and the information obtained by the measurements is more comprehensive, with low redundancy and good mode independence. High data transmission and storage cost caused by massive data collected is a critical problem in bridge structural health monitoring. Thus the compressed sensing theory is introduced in this paper to reduce the sampling. The conventional measurement matrix is optimized to reduce the coherence between the measurement matrix and sparse basis, which is benefit for accurately reconstructing the original dynamic responses with a limited sampling data. The field test data under ambient vibration of Ji'an Bridge is utilized to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed structural dynamic response reconstruction method for bridges based on compressed sensing. The studied results include: the reconstructed response based on compressed sensing agrees well with the original response in time domain; when the compression ratio is more than 20%, the relative errors of the reconstructed response maintain less than 10%; the reconstructed responses using optimized measurement matrix provide higher accuracy than those using initial measurement matrix, especially in the case of lower compression ratio, resulting in reduction of data collection; the spectrum of the reconstructed response using optimized measurement matrix is smoother and matches well with the original response spectrum, and the peaks of the spectrum can be picked accurately; in contrast, the spectrum of the reconstructed response without optimization of the measurement matrix has more misjudgment of peaks, and some peaks even cannot be identified; the measurement matrix optimization method can be applied to random Gaussian matrix, Bernoulli matrix and sparse random matrix. The results demonstrate that the proposed structural dynamic response reconstruction method for bridges based on compressed sensing is an effective way to accurately reconstruct original dynamic response with a limited sampling data. © 2022, Editorial Board of Journal of Vibration Engineering. 为了克服传统卡尔曼滤波(Kalman filter,KF)算法在重构结构未测点响应时,需要已知测量噪声方差和过程噪声方差以及需假定二者为恒值的问题,提出了一种基于移动窗卡尔曼滤波(moving-window Kalman filter,MWKF)算法的结构响应重构方法.该方法的特点在于:无需预先按经验设定测量和过程噪声方差值,利用移动窗技术,首先实时估计二者的数值,然后基于KF算法,利用有限测点的响应信息重构结构未安装传感器位置的响应.以一个平面单跨框架结构为例进行数值模拟和试验分析.分析结果表明:该方法能有效地实时估计测量噪声方差和过程噪声方差,未测点的重构动力响应时程与计算响应时程或者测量响应吻合良好.

Abstract :
Theoretical or numerical progressive collapse analysis is necessary for important civil structures in case of unforeseen accidents. However, currently, most analytical research is carried out under the assumption of material elasticity for problem simplification, leading to the deviation of analysis results from actual situations. On this account, a progressive collapse analysis procedure for truss structures is proposed, based on the assumption of elastoplastic materials. A plastic importance coefficient was defined to express the importance of truss members in the entire system. The plastic deformations of members were involved in the construction of local and global stiffness matrices. The conceptual removal of a member was adopted, and the impact of the member loss on the truss system was quantified by bearing capacity coefficients, which were subsequently used to calculate the plastic importance coefficients. The member failure occurred when its bearing capacity arrived at the ultimate value, instead of the elastic limit. The extra bearing capacity was embodied by additional virtual loads. The progressive collapse analysis was performed by iterations until the truss became a geometrically unstable system. After that, the critical progressive collapse path inside the truss system was found according to the failure sequence of the members. Lastly, the proposed method was verified against both analytical and experimental truss structures. The critical progressive collapse path of the experimental truss was found by the failure sequence of damaged members. The experimental observation agreed well with the corresponding analytical scenario, proving the method feasibility.

Direct application of the Kalman filter algorithm to state estimation of civil structures presents a computational challenge due to their high dimensions and complexity. Rewriting dynamic equations using modal coordinates can be an alternative solution to this problem because high modes with minimal contributions to structural responses can be truncated. Although the mode selection is important in accurately estimating the state of civil structures, studies on determining the remaining mode number are limited. Hence, the mode selection method in the Kalman filter for the optimal reconstruction of structural responses is investigated in this study. A modal signalto-noise ratio (MSNR) is defined as the ratio of the estimated modal response variance to the corresponding estimation error variance. Only modes with MSNR values higher than an analytically derived threshold are selected. A beam structure is numerically investigated to examine effects of excitation amplitude and frequency, measurement noise, and number of sensors on the adaptive mode selection for optimal response reconstruction. Experimental studies using a simply supported overhanging beam also confirm the efficacy of the proposed approach in response reconstruction using multiple types of sensors (including strain gauges, displacement sensors and accelerometers). Both the numerical and experimental results reveal that using all vibration modes or a complete numerical model with all degrees of freedom will reduce the accuracy of response reconstruction.

Abstract :
This Technical Note serves as one of the first review-based studies by analyzing existing trends of incorporating building information modeling (BIM) into the higher education of architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC)-related disciplines. Assisted by a scientometric review approach, this study identified mainstream journals and conference proceedings publishing BIM educational research outputs and analyzed existing research keywords. The results show that the Journal of Professional Issues in Engineering Education and Practice was ranked as the top journal measured by the number of publications and the total citations received by all articles related to BIM education. However, the Journal of Construction Engineering and Management was the journal with the highest average influence per article despite its small number of publications in BIM education. The keyword analysis through visualized mapping and quantitative analysis revealed that existing BIM educational studies had focused more on construction-related disciplines. Discipline-specific pedagogical activities were reported (e.g., interactive display in construction education), and there had been educational efforts to bridge different AEC disciplines through integrated and collaborative approaches. Several research trends were identified following the keyword analysis, such as the need of incorporating BIM at the program level by extending from a single course (e.g., quantity surveying) and integrating BIM with other digital technologies (e.g., drone). This study reports the state of BIM education literature by providing an overview of the latest trends of adopting BIM in the AEC education. Based on the current review, some continuous work in BIM education is foreseen, including educational innovation addressing both technical and managerial aspects of BIM, as well as the interdisciplinary collaboration to reduce the fragmentation among AEC disciplines.
