Abstract :
As urbanization progresses, efficient land resource management is essential for sustainable urban development. While existing studies emphasize the positive impact of urban economic linkages (UEL) on urban land-use efficiency (ULUE), they often assume equal partnerships, overlooking the asymmetric nature of UEL. This study uses a modified gravity model and super-efficiency SBM model to explore the impact of unequal economic linkages within the UEL network on ULUE across 284 Chinese cities from 2002 to 2021. The findings reveal that ULUE increased until 2017 but declined thereafter. Cities in the southeastern coastal regions show higher ULUE, while those in the northeast exhibit lower efficiency. The Tobit model analysis indicates that cities with greater dominance in the UEL network tend to have higher ULUE, while those more dependent on external economies experience lower ULUE. Robustness checks confirm the stability of these results across different model specifications. The study underscores the importance of fostering more balanced economic linkages and advocates for policy reforms aimed at enhancing urban economic integration to improve ULUE across cities.

Abstract :
The degree and causes of socio-spatial segregation at different geographic scales remain largely unexplored in Chinese cities. This study uses multilevel modeling and national micro-individual census data to analyze educational and hukou segregation at the district, subdistrict, and neighborhood scales across 333 Chinese cities. We find that educational segregation is generally more pronounced than hukou segregation, and both are more severe at smaller geographic scales. Cities in eastern China and those with higher political status are the most segregated. Our results also support both spatial assimilation and global city theories. Socioeconomic inequality, cultural differences, and global connectedness are all positively associated with segregation levels, with these associations being strongest at the neighborhood scale, where intergroup exclusion is greater. In terms of the impact of the welfare regime, government divestment of public services and housing commodification exacerbate segregation. The provision of public housing helps mitigate micro-scale educational segregation. However, it exacerbates segregation between locals and migrants who do not qualify for housing subsidies. The emergence of polycentricity exacerbates micro-scale educational segregation. Some socioeconomic factors also contribute to segregation levels. In sum, the degree and determinants of socio-spatial segregation, and the policies needed to address them, vary across geographic scales.

Abstract :
Previous literature on the notion of escalator regions has focused on the impact of unidirectional spatial mobility on intragenerational mobility. Using data from the Chinese General Social Survey conducted in 2010, 2013, and 2015, this study elucidates the effects of bidirectional spatial mobility on intergenerational social mobility and its mechanisms. Consistent with the escalator region theory, a migration premium exists in contemporary China. Whether moving upward or downward across the urban hierarchy, migrants can achieve more proportional upward intergenerational mobility than non-migrants. However, the escalator regions for each directional migrant subgroup and their underlying mechanisms of social mobility are somewhat different. The positive impact of downward spatial mobility on intergenerational mobility is largely due to one-off elevator effects in the relatively populous or economically advanced destination cities. In contrast, all destination cities, not just the core cities, can act as escalator regions for upward migrants as a result of long-term escalator effects. These conclusions generally apply to migrants with and without local hukou. However, compared to local hukou migrants, non-local hukou migrants' opportunities for social advancement are largely constrained by institutional discrimination, so they depend more on the continuing escalator effect that takes time to accumulate human and social capital to realize upward intergenerational mobility.

Abstract :
This study examines the temporal changes in income segregation within the ambient population around the clock using mobile phone big data. It employs ordinal entropy, a metric suited for measuring segregation among ordered groups, to quantify the level of segregation among eight income groups within micro-geographic units throughout the 24-h period on a weekday and a weekend day in the urban core of Guangzhou, China. The study further decomposes daily segregation by location and time profile. We identify urban functions and neighborhood contexts relevant for income segregation and explore their temporal variation. Using group-based trajectory analysis, we classify daily segregation trends among 400 m urban grids into seven distinct trajectories for both weekday and weekend. Our findings confirm that segregation fluctuates constantly. The role of local urban functions, particularly retail, accommodation, and offices, and neighborhood context, such as the number of residents and the share of non-local migrants, exhibits a significant temporal rhythm. The seemingly convoluted 24-h segregation time series among urban grids follow just a few distinct trajectories with clear geographical patterns. There is limited variability at individual grids both over the course of a day and across days. Shifts across different trajectory types between weekday and weekend are rare. The dynamic daily segregation in the ambient population per se may be an enduring characteristic of neighborhoods and a real-time channel for neighborhood contextual influences, potentially fueling long-term residential segregation and neighborhood change.

Abstract :
Parental support increasingly influences young people's housing outcomes. Using OLS models, this study examines the relative effects of parental and own socioeconomic status and political resources on young homeowners' housing quality and their temporal dynamics in Beijing, China. We find that the market transition theory has explanatory power for both generations. However, the socioeconomic status of parents outweighs that of young homeowners in influencing their multifaceted housing qualities. These housing qualities are also positively associated with parents', but negatively with the young homeowners' political resources. This indicates power persistence theory does not stand for the younger generation, but parental political advantages derived from the socialist system are remanent in shaping contemporary youth's housing stratification. The more recent the acquisition of homeownership by young adult children, the stronger the positive influence of parental attributes, but the weaker the influence of the younger generation's own attributes. This demonstrates the intergenerational reproduction of housing stratification and socio-spatial inequality becomes more pronounced as housing affordability declines.

Abstract :
There is a growing body of literature on the effects of escalator regions on intergenerational social mobility (ISM) of migrants. Nevertheless, the role of migrant origins in migration outcomes remain neglected. To address this gap, this study attempts to investigate whether migrants' birthplaces continue to have an impact after they move to escalator regions and the mechanism of this impact. Using data from the 2010, 2013, and 2015 Chinese General Social Survey, our findings suggest that the effect of escalator regions on migrants' ISM varies according to the size of their birthplace. Furthermore, the birthplace effect on migrants' ISM when relocating to escalator regions is partially mediated by the birthplace effect on education. Finally, it was found that this birthplace effect varies according to dynamic human capital; migrants with high levels of dynamic human capital can overcome the birthplace effect after relocating to escalator regions.

Abstract :
ObjectivesTo examine the causal impact of small businesses on street theft and the underlying mechanisms.MethodsThe "Cleanup Holes in the Wall" campaign in Beijing, China, provides a rare opportunity for a natural experiment. Drawing on street view images processed by deep learning algorithms and other big data sources such as court judgments and location-based service (LBS) population, we use difference-in-difference (DID) models to investigate how the disappearance of small businesses leads to changes in the occurrence of theft. We further examine the mechanisms by introducing mediators, including ambient population and social activity.ResultsThe treatment units that experienced a mass loss of small businesses showed a significant reduction in street theft compared to the control units that were less affected by the cleanup campaign. Ambient population and social activity played a mediating role in promoting and deterring crime, respectively, with the former dominating. The results remain robust after including covariates in the models, balancing covariates using the propensity score matching method, and adopting alternative thresholds to classify the treatment group.ConclusionsThere are two competing yet coexisting mechanisms through which small businesses influence street theft. On the one hand, commercial premises provide large numbers of criminal opportunities for potential offenders; on the other hand, they are central to local social control and order. While small businesses exercise a certain amount of natural surveillance power, as a whole, they function primarily as crime generators. Implications for implementing targeted policies tailored to the nature of small businesses are discussed.

Abstract :
BackgroundIt remains unknown whether good neighbourhood perception can enhance the benefits of favourable built environment to physical activity. Moreover, the moderation pattern is less understood in developing countries.ObjectivesThis work aims to examine the moderation effects of perceived neighbourhood safety and aesthetics on the relationship between built environment and time for recreational walking.MethodsWe performed the examination using a sample of 760 residents in Fuzhou City, China. The Negative Binomial Regression Model was developed to examine the moderation roles of neighbourhood safety and aesthetics on the impact of built environment, adjusting for the effects of location, socioeconomic, personal preferences and social environment factors. Moreover, two sensitivity analyses were performed to test whether the moderators found are robust to the control of residential self-selection, and differential measures of conceptually-comparable aspects of built environment.ResultsWe found stronger associations of time for recreational walking with road density and proportion of parks and squares POIs for residents with high perception of neighbourhood safety, compared to those with low perception of neighbourhood safety. There was a greater effect of the proportion of parks and squares POIs, when perceived aesthetics was high than when perceived aesthetics was low. The findings of neighbourhood safety and aesthetics as moderator, were robust in the two sensitivity analyses. No significant moderation effect was found for land use diversity.ConclusionsHigh perceived neighbourhood safety can magnify the positive effects of road connectivity and accessibility to parks and squares. Neighbourhood aesthetics positively moderates the association of time for recreational walking with accessibility to parks and squares. The findings emphasize the need to consider safety- and aesthetics-specific differences in estimates of built environment effects. Improvements in neighbourhood safety and aesthetics are key to effective interventions in built environment to better promote physical activity.

Abstract :
Using novel Internet search data from Baidu Index, this study examines for the first time the nationwide distribution of city-level intensity of online suicidal ideation in China and the underlying social determinants and processes. We find that the intensity of suicidal ideation shows moderate spatial clustering, decreasing from east to west nationally and from developed to less developed areas within each province. Overall, socioeconomic inequality, social fragmentation as represented by single-generation households and religiosity, and the proportion of older adults are positively associated with suicidal ideation. Social deprivation, divorce rate, and male-to-female sex ratio have significant negative effects on suicidal ideation, while marriage rate has insignificant effects. Further analyses based on geographically weighted regression suggest that the direction, magnitude, and statistical significance of the set of risk factors relevant to suicidal ideation vary by contexts and that city-specific interventions for suicide prevention are needed.
