Can we return good for evil? A meta-analysis of social exclusion and prosocial behaviour SSCI
期刊论文 | 2025 , 64 (2) | BRITISH JOURNAL OF SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY
Abstract&Keyword Cite Version(1)

Abstract :

Numerous studies have discussed the connection between social exclusion and prosocial behaviour, yet the conclusions have been inconsistent. We conducted a three-level meta-analysis on 83 effect sizes derived from 53 studies (N = 21,405). Overall, a significant yet weak negative correlation was found between social exclusion and prosocial behaviour (r = -.10, 95% CI [-0.17, -0.04]). Moderator analysis revealed that individuals in collectivistic cultures may exhibit higher levels of prosocial behaviour following exclusion compared to those in individualistic cultures. The female proportion positively influenced the overall effect size. The type of prosocial behaviour was marginally significant, in that 'other' prosocial behaviour yielded the largest effect sizes. However, effects did not differ across age groups, between the inclusion condition and the neutral condition, or between experimental research and correlational research. Our results underscore the crucial roles of culture and gender in the relationship between social exclusion and prosocial behaviour.

Abstract :

The study analyzes the current state of research, frontiers, and trends in tolerance studies in multicultural contexts. The Web of Science Core Collection database was used to retrieve relevant literature from 2000 to 2022. CiteSpace and VOSviewer software were employed to analyze keywords through co-occurrence networks, co-polymerization classes, and burst terms, with a corresponding visual atlas created for analysis. A total of 705 valid articles were included. The results revealed that Maykel Verkuyten authored the highest number of articles (n = 12). The United States contributed the highest number of articles (n = 376, 53.33%). The Interpersonal Journal of Intercultural Relations published the most articles (n = 38, 5.39%). The most highly cited author was Shelly P. Harrell (n = 876) in the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry. The keyword with the highest frequency, surpassing 200 mentions, was "prejudice" (n = 205). The top three keywords in terms of centrality were "culture" (n = 0.13), "attitude" (n = 0.12), and "discrimination" (n = 0.11). Major research topics and hotspots in the field of Tolerance in Multicultural Contexts included the Color-blind perspective, Prejudice reduction practices, Tolerance education, and Ethnicity. The study highlights a growing interest in the effectiveness of education as an intervention to reduce prejudice among young people. Further research in this domain should combined the Internet and transcend the confines of prejudice.

Serve Yourself or Serve Your Students? How and When Supervisor Narcissism is Related to Mental Health of Graduate Students SSCI
期刊论文 | 2024 , 17 , 3555-3571 | PSYCHOLOGY RESEARCH AND BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT
Abstract&Keyword Cite Version(1)

Abstract :

Background: The mental health of graduate students is increasingly turning into one of the main issues in global health. Understanding the antecedents of graduate students' mental health and finding ways to improve the situation are crucial for the students and the entire educational system. Purpose: This study explores the relationship between supervisor narcissism and graduate students' mental health. Additionally, the study examines the mediating effects of mentorship styles (relationship-oriented and task-oriented) and the moderating role of student's proactive personality. Methods: This study conducted a three-wave survey, with each wave administered at four-month intervals, involving 547 graduate students. They completed questionnaires on supervisor narcissism, mentorship styles, proactive personality, and mental health. SPSS 26.0 was used to test our hypotheses. Results: This study indicated that: (1) Supervisor narcissism was negatively associated with graduate students' mental health, fully mediated by relationship-oriented and task-oriented mentorships; (2) Graduate students' proactive personalities moderated the relationship between these mentorship styles and their mental health; (3) Graduate students' proactive personalities moderated the indirect effect of supervisor narcissism on students' mental health through these mentorship styles. Conclusion: This study reveals the detrimental mechanisms through which supervisor narcissism affects graduate students' mental health. It also demonstrates that enhancing students' proactive personalities can mitigate these adverse effects. These findings provide empirical evidence within the context of higher education. Practical implications are provided for supervisors, students, and university administrators, emphasizing the importance of effectively matching supervisors with students and promoting students' proactive personalities. These measures are essential for improving the mental health of graduate students.

Wherefore art thou competitors? How situational affordances help differentiate among prosociality, individualism, and competition SSCI

Abstract :

The Triple Dominance Measure (choosing between prosocial, individualistic, and competitive options) and the Slider Measure ("sliding" between various orientations, for example, from individualistic to prosocial) are two widely used techniques to measure social value orientation, that is, the weight individuals assign to own and others' outcomes in interdependent situations. Surprisingly, there is only moderate correspondence between these measures, but it is unclear why and what the implications are for identifying individual differences in social value orientation. Using a dataset of 8021 participants from 31 countries and regions, this study revealed that the Slider Measure identified fewer competitors than the Triple Dominance Measure, accounting for approximately one-third of the non-correspondence between the two measures. This is (partially) because many of the Slider items do not afford a competitive option. In items where competition is combined with individualism, competitors tended to make the same choices as individualists. Futhermore, we demonstrated the uniqueness of competitors. Compared to prosocials and individualists, competitors exhibited lower levels of both social mindfulness and trust. Overall, the present work highlights the importance of situational affordances in measuring personality, the benefits of distinguishing between individualists and competitors, and the importance of utilizing a measure that distinguishes between these two proself orientations.

How supervisor Machiavellianism affects graduate student creativity: a mediated moderation model SSCI
期刊论文 | 2024 | STUDIES IN HIGHER EDUCATION
Abstract&Keyword Cite Version(1)

Abstract :

Innovation and creativity are essential for graduate education, and supervisors have a substantial responsibility to foster the creative abilities of graduate students. However, empirical studies investigating how supervisor personality affects graduate student creativity are rare. To enhance the ability of higher education institutions to cultivate creativity among graduate students, we examined how supervisor Machiavellianism leads graduate students to perceived objectification, reducing graduate student creative performance based on the Job Demands-Resources model and Job-Demand-Control-Support theory. We proposed personal initiative as the moderator to explore boundary conditions of the relationship between supervisor Machiavellianism and perceived objectification. Results from 326 graduate students across three time points indicated that supervisor Machiavellianism negatively affects graduate students' creative performance, and graduate students' perceived objectification fully mediates the relationship. Additionally, graduate student personal initiative moderated this relationship. Graduate students with high personal initiative can mitigate the negative effects of Machiavellian supervisors. Our findings emphasize the significance of considering the individual traits of both supervisors and graduate students in graduate education with valuable theoretical and practical implications discussed.

Abstract :

Student-teacher relationships (STRs) have been examined by many studies. However, an omission still exists, the existing scales are not appropriate for studying STRs in private colleges because of the special character of these schools. This paper presents the development and validation of Private-College Student-Teacher Relationship Scale (PCSTRS), the first instrument to evaluate student-teacher relationships (STRs) in private colleges. The PCSTRS has six dimensions: trust, interaction, intimacy, care, approval, and comfort. In our main study, the validity and reliability of the six-factor PCSTRS model were demonstrated. The result of internal consistency coefficient indicated the high reliability of the scale, and the result of concurrent validity indicated the significant correlational relationships between the PCSTRS with other STR measures. In supplementary study, the PCSTRS was administered to 360 participants to confirm the applicability of PCSTRS and investigate the relation of STRs and students' traits, performance, and wellbeing, as well as the differences between the private school and the public school in this relation; the analyses revealed that there were significant differences in trust, intimacy, and care between private and public colleges; positive correlations were found between STRs and self-esteem, self-efficacy, academic performance, extracurricular activity involvement, and subjective wellbeing. Present research firstly develops the PCSTRS, examined the reliability and validity, and provides the proposed nomological network among related constructs.
