Abstract :

The Hongguleleng Formation in western Junggar, northwest China preserves a rich variety of fossils and was previously regarded as a "refugium" during the Late Devonian biotic crisis. Uncertainty in the age of the Hongguleleng Formation has persisted for a considerable time. In this study, cyclostratigraphic analysis was carried out on the Upper Devonian Bulongguoer and Wulankeshun sections from western Junggar, northwest China. Time series analysis and modeling of iron (Fe) concentration proxy data reveal variations with frequencies comparable to those of the Earth's long and short orbital eccentricity, obliquity, and precession index in both successions. Interpreted 405-kyr long orbital eccentricity cycles were used to establish floating astronomical time scales (FATs) for the two successions. From these FATs the depositional duration of the Hongguleleng Formation is calculated as 11.5 +/- 0.58 Myr. The Devonian-Carboniferous boundary age of 359.3 +/- 0.3 Ma was chosen as a time "anchor", resulting in an astronomically determined age of 370.2 +/- 0.66 Ma for the base of the Hongguleleng Formation. Combined with conodont biostratigraphy, this age indicates that the Hongguleleng Formation in western Junggar does not reach down to the Frasnian-Famennian boundary. Sedimentary noise modeling of the reconstructed Fe concentration time series provides an interpretation of sea-level variations in the PaleoAsian Ocean controlled by astronomical forcing from very long orbital eccentricity cycles (g4-g3) throughout the Late Devonian period. Intensified monsoonal climates during these orbital eccentricity cycle maxima led to elevated terrigenous input and strengthened upwelling, which enhanced primary productivity in the western Junggar. We propose an "astronomical climate change" model as a driving mechanism that led to biotic recovery in the Famennian Hongguleleng Formation.

Abstract :

The Xiemisitai-Shaerbuerti Mountain region, located in West Junggar, Xinjiang, China, represents an important part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). From the Silurian Pridoli epoch to early Devonian, a set of basin filling sequence transitioning from marine flysch to shelf carbonate is deposited in this region. The spatial-temporal distribution of the sedimentary system and analyses of lithofacies and sources can provide evidence for reconstructing the paleogeographic configuration of western Junggar and the evolution of the Paleo-Asian Ocean. This study conducted a detailed analysis of lithofacies, sandstone clasts, as well as major and trace elements in the Mangkelu Ⅱ section of the Shaerbuerti Mountain area to explore the sedimentary basin's evolution, tectonic background, and provenance attributes. The Mangkelu Ⅱ section consists of the Wutubulake Formation at the bottom and the Mangeer Formation at the top. The facies successions from bottom to top includes slope–basin background deposits, basin turbidites, hyperpycnal flow fans at the shelf margin, shelf, and shallow sea grain shoal, representing an upward-shallowing basin-fill sequence. The main sediments are sandstone, conglomerate, and bioclastic limestone. The sandstone is mainly composed of feldspar and lithics, with an index of compositional variability (ICV) of 1.37, which is greater than 1, indicating low maturity. The sandstone samples are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and depleted in high field strength elements (HFSEs), with a ratio of light rare earth elements to heavy rare earth elements (LREEs/HREEs) ranging from 2.89 to 7.41, averaging 6.15. The provenance and tectonic discrimination diagrams show a mixed source of intermediate-felsic volcanic rocks and andesites, derived mainly from continental and oceanic island arcs. Volcanic rocks from the Xiemisitai-Shaerbuerti Mountain island arc provided abundant material for the basin fill. The transformation of sedimentary facies from turbidites to hyperpycnites in the continental shelf may represent a temporary termination of basin filling and the end of subduction and collision during this period in the Shaerbuerti Mountains. © 2025 The Editorial Staff of Sedimentary Geology and Tethyan Geology. 新疆西准噶尔北部谢米斯台山—沙尔布尔提山地区是中亚造山带的重要组成部分.志留纪普里道利世—早泥盆世期间,该地区沉积了一套由海相复理石到陆棚碳酸盐岩转变的盆地充填序列,其沉积体系的时空展布、岩相变化以及物源分析可为重建西准噶尔北部古地理格局以及古亚洲洋演化提供证据.本文对沙尔布尔提山地区的芒克鲁Ⅱ剖面进行了详细的岩相分析、砂岩碎屑统计、主、微量元素分析,来探讨沉积盆地的演化过程、构造背景和物源属性.芒克鲁Ⅱ剖面出露乌吐布拉克组与曼格尔组,剖面由底到顶依次出现盆地—斜坡背景层沉积、盆地浊积岩、陆棚边缘的异重流扇、陆棚、浅水颗粒滩的相序列,表现为向上变浅的盆地充填序列.沉积物以砂岩、砾岩和生物碎屑颗粒灰岩为主.砂岩成分以长石、岩屑为主,成分变异指数ICV=1.37,值大于 1,指示了碎屑岩成熟度低.砂岩样品富集大离子亲石元素(LILEs),亏损高场强元素(HFSEs),轻稀土与重稀土元素比值(LREEs/HREEs)在 2.89~7.41,均值 6.15.物源判别及构造判别图解综合显示其物源主要来自长英质火山岩及安山岩的混合源区,物源区以大陆岛弧与大洋岛弧环境为主.研究表明,谢米斯台山-沙尔布尔提山岛弧火山岩可能为盆地充填过程提供了丰富的物源,盆地浊积岩向陆棚异重岩沉积的转变不仅代表了盆地充填的暂时性终止,也有可能代表了沙尔布尔提山地区在这一时期的俯冲碰撞活动基本结束.

Abstract :

The Upper Devonian Hongguleleng Formation is a significant stratigraphic unit near the Frasnian/Famennian and Devonian/Carboniferous boundaries of the Kazakhstan Paleoplate. However, its age is still under debate. A new palynostratigraphic analysis was conducted at the Gennaren section to provide a more accurate biostratigraphic assignment. In this study, we identified 43 species belonging to 26 spore genera, including those in open nomenclature. Despite the poor preservation of the palynofloras, the spore taxa were categorized into two assemblages. Assemblage I is established at the lower part of the lower member of the Hongguleleng Formation, containing Cornispora varicornata, cf. Auroraspora pseudocrista, and Cyrtospora cristifera. Assemblage II is from the upper part of the lower member of the Hongguleleng Formation, including Grandispora cornuta, Grandispora famennensis var. famennensis, Grandispora cf. famennensis var. minutus, Grandispora microseta, and Rugospora radiata. These assemblages are compared with the Western European DV Oppel Zone (lower-middle Famennian), and the GF to VCo Oppel zones. The assemblages are equivalent to the conodont crepida–rhomboidea and marginifera to Lower trachytera zones (middle-upper Famennian). © 2024

Abstract :

The Silurian-Devonian Boundary (SDB) was the first Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) to be established. Extensive and well-preserved SDB strata are found in Western Europe and North America. Territory of China is composed of multiple plates and terranes, which were located in the equatorial and low-latitude regions of the northern hemisphere during the late Silurian to the Early Devonian. Due to the Kwangsian Orogeny, continuous Silurian-Devonian sequences are absent in the main parts of North China, Yangtze, and Tarim cratons in China. Accordingly, continuous stratal sections across the SDB have only been sporadically reported from the orogenic belts and southwestern margin of South China. The lack of continuous carbonate sediments during the Silurian-Devonian and scarcity of fossil markers obtained has long time limited for complex research on the SDB in China. However, the discovery of the conodont Caudicriodus woschmidti in several regions, and the widespread presence of encrinurid trilobites and crinoids, have allowed recognition of the SDB in China. Abundant volcanic material near the SDB facilitates high-precision chronological studies. Apart from the global delta 13C positive excursion and Icriodus Event above the SDB, most other events are only evident in certain regions or even in a single section. Therefore, there is an urgent need for more data and evidence from other areas and plates. This work summarizes research on the SDB in China from various tectonic settings, tectonic plates, and from different facies and regions, and provides a brief review of the research history, current state of art, achievements in study of the SDB in China, and outlines prospects for future research.

华南中—上泥盆统碳酸盐岩高度发育,但却缺乏系统碳酸盐岩微相研究。广西都安四红山剖面和宜州拉利剖面的中—上泥盆统连续发育,是华南泥盆系重要的参考剖面。中—晚泥盆世,四红山剖面为斜坡—盆地相,而拉利剖面为台地—盆地相。本文重建了这两条剖面中—上泥盆统牙形石生物地层,在此基础上结合碳酸盐岩微相沉积学研究,恢复了它们同时期沉积环境演变过程,为不同地层单元的区域对比提供了可靠依据。在吉维特期和弗拉期FZ1~FZ4期,四红山剖面主要为分水岭组硅质灰岩及“榴江组”钙质泥岩,拉利剖面主要为老爷坟组礁灰岩。而在弗拉期牙形石带FZ5~FZ8期间,两条剖面均因海侵事件造成台地淹没形成五指山组,主要特征为大化石稀少的微晶/瘤状/泥质条带灰岩,本次海侵可以与全球Middlesex事件相对应。此外中—晚泥盆世一系列生物环境事件,如F-F事件可通过牙形类的种群更替得以识别。

Abstract :

Sediments from land are primarily transported into basins through hyperpycnal flow, which plays a significant role in the process of basin filling. Various models of hyperpycnites have been proposed. This study examines a Silurian-Devonian basin-fill sequence in NW China to validate existing models and presents a visually compelling case demonstrating the process of basin filling through flood-dominated river discharge. The Utubulak Member of the Kekexiongkuduke Formation can be subdivided into three parts, representing basin floor, slope and shelf environments, collectively representing a regressive basin fill sequence. The lower part consists of flood-related turbidites contain or encompass material of terrestrial and marine origin, their sustained and pulsed velocity structures are similar to river discharge. These turbidites may result from basinal hyperpycnal flow or retrogressive failures of the shelf-edge (hyperpycnal) delta. The middle (slope deposits) contains bi-graded hyperpycnite bed interpreted commonly attributed to deposition by river floods exhibiting the classical waxing-waning configuration. Additionally, fine-grained deposits resulting from river-generated, dilute hyperpycnal or hypopycnal plumes are observed interbedded with the basin turbidites or slope background deposits. In the upper part, the presence of thick-bedded sandstones indicates that sustained hyperpycnal flow can transport sands to the shelf-edge/shelf, facilitating deep-water sand delivery. The vertical distribution of the various flood-related facies in basin floor, slope and shelf strata emphasize the complexity of hyperpycnites in different settings, and particularly highlighting challenges associated with their recognition in basin deposits. The investigated succession accumulated in an island-arc setting which provided a favorable condition for a river-fed turbidite system to develop. The narrow shelf facilitated transport of sediments by hyperpycnal flows directly into the basin, while erosion of high mountains promoted a high sediment supply for hyperpycnal flow. And a river-fed turbidite system commonly developed during the late stages of basin filling.

Abstract :

<正>华南泥盆纪碳酸盐岩地层广泛发育,沉积厚度大,分布范围广,满足油气成藏条件是有利成藏区带。近二十年来,牙形石生物地层的建立为不同区域层序地层划分提供了可靠年代地层格架。但近十年来华南碳酸盐岩沉积研究主要聚焦于个别关键事件如弗拉期和法门期之交绝灭事件,导致目前华南中-晚泥盆世碳酸盐岩斜坡-盆地长周期的沉积环境演变尚不明确,其碳酸盐岩生产过程缺乏牙形石生物地层带来的时间地层格架控制,尤其是五指山组这一广为人知的浮游相碳酸盐岩的下界不明确,此前研究主要是上世纪八十至九十年代的成果,需要更新。

Abstract :

The Ediacaran glaciation has garnered considerable attention for its potential biological impact because it witnesses the birth of complex animals. Many researchers question whether large-scale regional or even global glaciations, represent critical barriers to the evolution of macroscopic animals. So how did complex animals survive during a major glaciation? One possible explanation is the existence of isolated shallower refugia or icefree oases. However, the sedimentary evolution of such ice-free oases and how they could support the survival of complex life forms are not yet fully understood. This study focuses on the inter-diamictite black sediments in the Ediacaran Talisayi Formation of NW China (Yili block), which may represent a habitable ice-free oasis during the Gaskiers glaciation. The sedimentary facies and geochemical analyses indicate that these deposits were formed in oxygenated and photic shallow glacier lake environments with highly developed microbial mat substrates, it was formed during a short-lived partial deglaciation with enhanced weathering. And diverse organic-wall microfossils were found within the inter-diamictite black sediments. Furthermore, based on the growth habits of modern microbial algal mats, a paleontological clock can be established to estimate the duration of partial deglaciation, which may have lasted only for thousands of years. The ice-free oasis formed during this period could potentially harbor complex ecosystems, providing valuable ecological and temporal windows for the evolution of complex animals.
