The Impact of Campus Soundscape on Enhancing Student Emotional Well-Being: A Case Study of Fuzhou University SCIE

Abstract :

As the primary setting for students' daily life and learning, university campuses are facing a growing concern about the impact of increased stress on students' emotional well-being. The sound environment plays a critical role in affecting students' mental health, learning efficiency, and overall well-being. However, research on the influence of campus soundscapes on students' emotions is limited, and the mechanisms behind these effects remain to be explored. This study, using the Qishan Campus of Fuzhou University as a case, investigates the impact of campus soundscapes on students' emotional perception and restorative effects. Four typical functional areas (academic zone (ACZ), residential zone (RDZ), recreational zone (RCZ), and administrative zone (ADZ)) were selected to analyze the effects of natural and artificial sounds on students' emotions and physiological states. Based on EEG, eye tracking, sound level measurements, and questionnaire surveys, a one-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to assess students' emotional arousal, valence, and physiological restoration under different soundscape conditions. The results showed that natural sounds, such as the sound of wind-blown leaves and flowing water, significantly improved students' emotions and restorative effects, while artificial noises like construction sounds and traffic noise had negative impacts. Additionally, subjective perceptions of soundscape restoration were positively correlated with arousal, valence, and acoustic comfort, and negatively correlated with gaze frequency and pupil size. The findings provide a theoretical foundation for optimizing campus soundscape design and highlight the importance of natural sounds in enhancing students' mental health and academic environment.

Abstract :

As the cultural importance of universities continues to grow, university museums have become key platforms for promoting university heritage and values. However, enhancing the visitor experience in these museums remains challenging. This study examines the effectiveness of smellscape in enhancing the visitor experience in university history museums, with a focus on how various scents impact visitors' emotions. Using the Fuzhou University History Museum as a case study, the museum was divided into three distinct zones: the Historical Evolution Zone (HEZ), the Contemporary Development Zone (CDZ), and the Thematic Exhibition Zone (TEZ). Specific scents were selected for each area to evaluate their emotional impact, and data were gathered using electroencephalography (EEG) indicators, emotional questionnaires, and scent pleasure scales. The results indicated that calming scents like sandalwood and agarwood, used in the HEZ, convey a sense of historical depth but may also evoke negative emotions, whereas sage enhances positive feelings. In the CDZ, rosemary and mint significantly improve emotional states, while lemongrass exhibits weaker pleasantness and appears less suited for this area. In the TEZ, scents such as patchouli and orange blossom align well with future-oriented themes, demonstrating high levels of pleasantness and emotional value. Smellwalk interviews further validated the experimental results, revealing notable differences in the emotional impact of smellscape across different exhibit zones. A thoughtful selection of scents can enhance the cultural expression of spaces and effectively regulate visitors' emotional experiences, strengthening the cultural resonance of museum environments. Future designers may consider incorporating olfactory elements into landscape design.

城中村是我国城市化发展的特殊产物,其所特有的文化和历史记忆是城市发展中不可忽略的有机组成,但城中村建筑存在高密度和复杂度兼具的问题,改造难度较大且涉及面广.厦门市湖里社城中村聚焦城中村中的消极空间,深入挖掘湖里社的地域文化和历史记忆,以"介入性"的局部小规模更新模式替代"排斥性"城中村改造模式,构建基于地方文化语义下的城中村消极空间的"介入性"更新方法,有效地激发了城中村消极空间的活力,实现了在地文化的更新.厦门湖里社对城中村消极空间的更新利用,是颇有意义的在地实践,为我们探寻激发消极空间活力的可能提供了有益启示.

在科技飞速发展的21世纪,全球化的生活进入了加速时代.伴随着计算机、互联网、虚拟现实技术、人工智能等现代科学技术发展的当代艺术也呈现了多元化发展的态势,对传统艺术的生存状况提出了挑战;但当我们从阿斯托·特勒曲线原理去梳理当代艺术的发展时,发现随着时间轴的推演,科技的进步是始终向上的,人们在追赶科技的时候其实无法与科技并驾齐驱,学习能力和适应性匹配完全无法顺应科技发展高度.当代艺术的思想内核在加速时代驱动下的时代特征呈现出内涵式发展的速度节奏.
