Abstract :

The availability of sensing platforms able to rapidly measure abused drugs directly in biological fluids in a single step would allow performing drugged driving screening on the site. The achievement of this goal is extremely important for preventing and controlling drug abuse and crime incidence. Motived by this, we constructed a simple, cost-effective and reagentless electrochemical aptamer-based (EAB) sensor with methamphetamine (MAMP) as the target molecule. This EAB sensor produced a nanomolar level of detection accuracy in unprocessed or minimally processed bio-samples. Specifically, circular dichroic spectrum was used to confirm that the truncated aptamer from the original sequence would undergo large binding-induced conformational changes. We then engineered the aptamer to work in the EAB platform and the resulting sensor enabled sensitive and specific detection of MAMP with the detection limit of 30 nM in undiluted serum, 50 nM in undiluted urine and 20 nM in 50% saliva. The sensor has good recovery rate, implying this method has good reliability and repeatability. The detection limit is far below the clinical detection threshold, it would be hopefully used for preliminary screening of drugged driving in real world.

Abstract :

A self-supported, nanoporous gold microelectrode decorated with various nanoparticles can be used for real-time electrochemical monitoring, and the high performance of these electrochemical biosensors originates from their unique and seamless solid/porous nanoarchitecture. In this work, new, 3D, nanoporous, gold-supported Pt nanoparticles are fabricated by Au-Zn alloying/dealloying and template membrane deposition methods to produce Au-Pt micromotors with highly accelerated motion. The speed of the micromotors can reach 1025 mu m s(-1) in a 10% H2O2 solution, which is almost three times faster than unetched Au-Pt micromotors. Four motion forms (circle, helical, circle and linear alternating, and linear) are demonstrated, and the speed of the circle motion is the fastest motion form. It is envisioned that the new fabrication method and enhanced motion can promote the micromotor efficiency for transport and delivery.

Propulsion of copper microswimmers in folded fluid channels by bipolar electrochemistry SCIE

Abstract :

We report for the first time that conducting objects could be propelled in folded liquid filled channels by bipolar electrochemistry. This approach was based on controlling the formation of hydrogen bubbles at one extremity of a bipolar electrode. In this work, copper wires used as microswimmers could move in folded channels with angles from 30 degrees to 180 degrees by bubble propulsion and the velocity fluctuated over time. A proportional relation between polarization voltage and average velocity in linear channel was verified. The motion of microswimmers could be controlled within these types of channels in space and time, which might broaden the applications of micromachines in bipolar electrochemistry.

Fabrication and characterization of Au-Fe/Ni/(Mo/Co) alloy microsphere motors (AMSM) based on physical vapor deposition SCIE

Abstract :

Au-Fe/Ni/(Mo/Co) alloy microsphere motors (AMSM), having an average diameter of 7 similar to 9 mu m, were fabricated though a rapid and effortless method than the template direct electroplating (TDEP), which only requires physical vapor deposition (PVD) of inert metal coat on commercially available microspheres; thus, several kinds of AMSM with different alloy composition can be manufactured readily. Via co-catalytic decomposing reaction in the mixed fuel of hydrogen peroxide and hydrazine, the ejection of oxygen bubbles generated from the Fe/Ni/(Mo/Co) alloy hemisphere provides a powerful directional propulsion. The AMSM's moving ability closely depends upon the content of mixed fuel and the composition of alloy, especially the content of nickel. The AMSM can move as fast as 548.63 mu m/s (ca. 64 body-lengths/s). Because of the permalloy composition, the AMSM also can be guided by the magnetic force besides controlled with the propelling force generated by the bubble thrust. Compared with the nanowire motor, the AMSM could facilitate different biomedical applications, such as targeted drug delivery in future research, because of its bigger specific surface area. Abstract :

Hypoxanthine, a purine heterocyclic compound with N and O atoms, has capability to combine metal ions or adsorb on metals. By using density functional theory (DFT) method calculation, the energy, charge distribution, molecular orbital and vibration spectra information of tautomeric hypoxanthine were given. Combined with these DFT results, the influence of pH on the structure of tautomeric hypoxanthine was studied by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Electrochemical SERS was applied to study the properties of hypoxanthine/gold interface. It is found that the structure of adsorbed hypoxanthine was changed from slightly tilted to upright with negatively moving of potentials. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract :

A novel pH-sensitive controlled release system is proposed by using mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) as nanocarriers.MSNs with a large pore diameter are synthesized by using 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene as a pore-expanding agent and are modified with a PDA coating by virtue of oxidative self-polymerization of dopamine in neutral pH. PDA coated MSNs are characterized by FTIR, TEM, N2 adsorption and XPS techniques. The PDA coating can work as pH-sensitive gatekeepers to control the release of drug molecules from MSNs in response to the pH-stimulus. Doxorubicin (DOX, an anticancer drug) can be released in the acid media and blocked in the neutral media. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract :

Au-Fe/Ni alloy nanowire motors, having an average length of 5.4 +/- 1.2 mu m and a diameter of 280 +/- 10 nm, can move fast in a mixed fuel containing H2O2 and N2H4. The powered motion is attributed to the bubble thrust produced from catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide on the Fe/Ni alloy segments, while hydrazine seems to act as a co-catalyst. The regulation of speed can be achieved by modulating the proportion of alloy composition, and the highest speed obtained is up to 850 mu m s(-1) (ca. 157 body-length per s), which is the fastest among all nanowire motors. Because of the ferronickel segment's magnetism, the Au-Fe/Ni alloy nanomotors also can be guided by the magnetic force, in addition to being controlled by the propelling force generated by the bubble thrust.
