Health-Radar: Noncontact Multitarget Heart Rate Variability Detection Using FMCW Radar SCIE
期刊论文 | 2025 , 25 (1) , 405-418 | IEEE SENSORS JOURNAL
Abstract&Keyword Cite Version(2)

Abstract :

Heart rate variability (HRV), indicating the variation in intervals between consecutive heartbeats, is a crucial physiological indicator of human health. However, detecting HRV using frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar is highly susceptible to interference from respiration, minor body movements, and environmental noise, especially in multitarget scenarios. To address these challenges, we propose the Health-Radar system, which comprises three functional modules. In the target detection module, the system accurately identifies the number and locations of targets. In the phase extraction module, the signal undergoes dc offset calibration to extract the chest displacement signals. In the heartbeat signal extraction module, we introduce Health-VMD, an adaptive parameter variational mode decomposition (VMD) method. This method optimizes the VMD parameters using an improved grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA) and accurately extracts vital sign signals from chest displacement signals to estimate HRV. In addition, we propose a novel objective function, composed of permutation entropy, mutual information, and energy loss rate (PME), specifically designed for vital sign extraction. Experiments with multiple participants in various scenarios demonstrated that the designed system can accurately identify different targets and detect HRV with high precision. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the detected interbeat intervals (IBIs) is 29.72 ms, the RMSE of the standard deviation of NN intervals (SDNN) is 4.1 ms, and the RMSE of the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) is 18.61 ms, outperforming existing methods.

A low-resolution infrared gesture recognition method combining weak information reconstruction and joint training strategy SCIE

Abstract&Keyword Cite Version(2)

Abstract :

In the evolution of non-contact human-computer interactions, the integration of low-resolution infrared thermal pile sensors has gained prominence, particularly in applications like smart homes and human-computer collaboration. However, challenges arise from uncontrollable environmental temperatures, causing issues such as blurry or missing details in finger contours during infrared thermal pile imaging. This paper addresses these challenges by employing the DiffBIR diffusion model for gesture reconstruction and integrating the CBAM module into a lightweight gesture recognition network named Infrared Image Reconstruction Gesture Network (IR-GNet). The proposed approach enhances attention weights for hand regions and effectively eliminates interference from other heat sources, ensuring optimal performance in low-resolution scenarios. Our model achieved state-of-the-art accuracy on both static and dynamic gesture datasets, and on the Worker-Robot Collaboration (WRC) gesture dataset. Experiments involving thermal source interference also demonstrated that the model outperforms other lightweight models in terms of recognition accuracy while meeting real-time requirements. Moreover, this study introduces a joint training approach to mitigate the relatively high time cost associated with image reconstruction. By combining the training set of original images with their corresponding reconstructed images, and using only original, unreconstructed images for testing, significant enhancements in recognition accuracy were observed under identical testing conditions. These results affirm the feasibility of deploying the proposed network in real-time scenarios to achieve a robust gesture recognition system.

Abstract :

The stable vehicular space-air-ground integrated network (SAGIN) requires high-gain multi-beam/beam-steering antenna systems. In this paper, we propose a compact high-gain wideband circularly-polarized (CP) beam-steering antenna with novel rotatable phase-gradient metasurface (PGM) transmitarrays for the SAGIN. It consists of a novel substrate-integrated-waveguide (SIW) array feed and three innovative metasurface transmitarrays (M-0, M-1, and M-2), capable of providing any compensation phases between 0 degrees and 360 degrees. The novel PGM unit cells have two identical CP U-slot patches that perform CP-to-CP conversions with high transmission efficiencies. In addition, a new and accurate beam-steering analytical formulations are proposed for fast predictions of scanning angles. Experimental results show that the proposed compact SIW array feed achieves an aperture efficiency of 58.8%, a 3-dB gain bandwidth of 10.8%, and a 3-dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of over 23%. The proposed entire beam-steering antenna achieves a peak gain of 27.56 dBic, which corresponds to an aperture efficiency of 48.5%, and an exceptionally wide 3-dB AR bandwidth within the scanning range. It is a strong candidate for future millimeter-wave communications in satellite and radar systems and vehicular communications.

Abstract :

A miniaturized ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) tag antenna was designed. The antenna was composed of two square spiral resonators shorted inside and outside. By adjusting the edge length of the outer ring spiral resonator and the spacing between the inner and outer ring spiral resonators, the resonant frequency of the proposed tag antenna could be effectively tuned. The simulation results show that the proposed tag antenna has good impedance matching and the frequency band range covers the whole UHF band (840~960 MHz). It has a dimension of 7.60 mm×7.60 mm×0.05 mm, which is 96% smaller than the traditional spiral resonator (SR) antenna. The measure result shows that the proposed tag antenna achieves the maximum reading distance at 910 MHz in 4 W effective isotropic radi-ated power. The proposed UHF RFID tag antenna has some advantages of small size, wide frequency band, low cost and easy batch fabrication, and is suitable for applications with small size requirements. © 2024, Beijing Xintong Media Co., Ltd. Abstract :

Currently, there is no standardized approach for evaluating the efficiency of planar wireless power transfer (WPT) systems across varying specifications and sizes, particularly under positional deviations. This paper introduces an innovative approach to assess the positional tolerance of single-transmitter, single-receiver planar magnetically coupled resonant wireless power transfer (MCR-WPT) systems. We present a normalized effective working range that quantifies the operational range of different MCR-WPT systems where transmission efficiency degradation is limited to a specified value, such as sigma%. This approach measures the system's resilience to coil misalignment and identifies key parameters influencing transmission efficiency. The practicality and effectiveness of the proposed method are demonstrated through experimental validation.

Abstract :

In this paper, a new method is proposed from the FDTD model to solve the challenge that the digital signal source is time-harmonic or single frequency reconstruction. The new method does not need to know Green's function and identify the peak value. Through in-depth exploration and improvement of the frequency domain time-reversal method, the source condition of single frequency sources is derived. A numerical example is given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. This work provides another way to further develop practical electromagnetic source reconstruction techniques and test systems.

Abstract :

The time reversal method has been shown to be capable of reconstructing electromagnetic sources. However, in the past, most sources reconstructed are point sources that may not be often seen in practical situations. This paper presents preliminary studies on the time-reversal reconstruction of the sources with arbitrary geometrical shapes and with finite frequency bandwidths. Our results show that the time-reversal method, incorporating the Kurtosis, can effectively find the locations, excitation, and band-limited arbitrarily shaped sources. In addition, in an ergodic cavity, a single sensor is adequate to reconstruct the sources with reduced operational cost and complexity. This paper lays the groundwork for further development of the TR method for its uses in realistic scenarios of source reconstructions.

Abstract :

This article presents a novel millimeter-wave (mm-wave) radar-based continuous motion detection approach called mmCMD for the long-term care of the elderly. The proposed mmCMD visualizes the micro-Doppler signatures of continuous motions generated from millimeter radar as images, which are then analyzed by an object detection network for continuous motion detection. To improve the imaging quality of micro-Doppler signatures, a dynamic feature visualization (DFV) method is proposed by selectively mapping the micro-Doppler matrix (MDM) elements with significant values, highlighting human motion to enhance subsequent detection network's accuracy in capturing the details of the motion. Furthermore, a novel detection network is designed for the visualized micro-Doppler images by combining the specially designed fusion squeeze-and-excitation (FSE) module with the coordinate attention (CA) into the YOLOv5 architecture, which is distinct from prior works that overlook global contextual information. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed mmCMD achieves a mean average precision (mAP) of 93% at the intersection over union (IoU) thresholds from 0.5 to 0.95 and an F1 score of 99% for 12 actions, which makes it a promising solution for remotely monitoring and detecting elderly individuals' activities to enhance safety and risk prevention capabilities.
