Abstract:

The present paper describes a series of tests on hollow structural steel (HSS) columns of circular and square section filled with normal concrete and recycled concrete. Total of ten short specimens and twenty long specimens, including 24 recycled concrete filled steel tubular (RCFST) columns and 6 normal concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) columns, were tested to investigate the performance of such composite columns. The main parameters varied in the tests are: (1) concrete type,normal concrete and recycled concrete;and (2) load eccentricity, from 0 to 20mm. The test results show that both the concrete type and load eccentricity have influence on the load capacity of the composite columns. However, the failure modes of RCFST and CFST columns are almost the same. Comparisons are made between the test results and the predicted ultimate strengths of RCFST columns using the existing codes,such as ACI 318-1999,AIJ-1997, AISC-LRFD-1999,BS5400-1979,DBJ13-51-2003 and EC4-1994.
