Abstract:
As a consequence of failures of reinforced concrete columns of modem highway bridges with specific seismic design in recent urban earthquakes, a large number of research efforts have been concentrated on how to increase the seismic performance of RC columns. The concept of prefabricated GFRP tube jacketed RC columns is proposed in this paper. The newly proposed concept consists of a prefabricated GFRP tube as a jacket of a conventional RC column, where the GFRP jacket plays a triple role as formwork for casting core concrete and confinement and enhancement for the concrete core. To verify the seismic performance of the columns, two simple supported bridge models with a conventional RC column and a prefabricated GFRP tube jacketed column are tested on the shaking table. One of the models was built with columns of a relatively low aspect ratio of 2.5, and the other was built with columns of a moderate aspect ration of 4. The preliminary results show both the GFRP tube jacketed columns excellent seismic performance.
