Abstract:

Diatomite and wood activated carbon were used to produce activated carbon ceramic composite materials. Effect of carbon content of the composites on properties such as iodine absorption, bulk density, porosity and compression strength of the materials were tested and thus the optimal process parameters were determined. The influence of activated carbon content and ambient temperatures on benzene removal capacity was also characterized. The results show that the optimal ratio (by mass) of diatomite to activated carbon is 7 to 3, and the optimal sintering temperature is 800°C. The materials with carbon content of 25.62% made under these conditions show the following properties: porosity of 52.48%, buck density of 1.067 g/cm3, compression strength of 10.466 MPa, iodine absorption of 291.24 mg/g, benzene absorption capacity of 9.56 and specific surface area of 290.72 m2/g. The benzene absorption capacity increased significantly with the increasing of activated carbon content but is merely affected by the ambient temperature.
