Abstract:
Precision fermentation plays an important role in the fields of food, pharmaceuticals, and biological research. This process demands an intricate control of the environmental oxygen (O2) concentration. Traditional methods rely on large, complex, and costly gas sources and controllers. We develop an electrochemical O2 conditioner (EOC) integrating all functions into a compact device. By adjusting electrochemical parameters (voltage and current), the EOC enables precise O2 control from 1% to 99% and switching between O2 generation and removal. Meanwhile, it achieves rapid O2 removal (470 mL/min) and generation (390 mL/min), with over 90% reductions in size and weight and a substantial decrease in energy and time consumption (73% and 33% reductions, respectively) compared to pressure swing adsorption (PSA) systems. Applied in yeast fermentation, the EOC doubles alcohol yield by optimizing aerobic and anaerobic processes. © 2025 The Author(s)
