Abstract:

As a populous country, how to deal with the continuously growing massive volume of domestic waste, and how to explore effective and sustainable operation models for the waste collection and transportation, are urgent research topics to be addressed. This article focuses on optimizing waste collection routes, aiming to reduce the total operation cost of waste transportation. Meanwhile, to ensure the collection of waste in types, the flexible multi-compartment vehicles are introduced, to effectively promote the collection of classified waste. To investigate the proposed vehicle routing problem for waste collection, this article develops a mix-integer linear programming model for it. And numerical experiments on random instances are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the model. Finally, analysis of the computation results obtained by applying the state-of art solver Gurobi shown the advantage of flexible compartments to collect multiple types of waste. © 2025 The Authors.
