Abstract:

To ensure not only good workability in fresh stage but also mechanical and deformation properties after hardening of self-compacting concrete (SCC) applied in concrete filled steel tubular structures, the mix optimization of SCC was made to meet the requirements of concrete filled steel tubular structures. The pumping trials of SCC and normal concrete (NC) filled arch steel tubes were both carried out on site;the results show that the SCC mixtures can be pumped conveniently without undergoing any segregation. To study the mechanical properties of SCC filled steel tubes,uni-axial compressive tests of concrete filled tubes were conducted. The test specimens also include the short members of concrete filled steel tubes (CFST), which were cut from the arch steel tubes of pumping trials. The results show that the mechanical and deformation properties such as elastic modulus, ultimate bearing capacity of the self-compacting concrete short tubes do not differ significantly from the corresponding properties of normal concrete. Finally, the SCC mixtures was applied to a concrete filled steel tubular arch bridge;the detailed description of the SCC mix proportion and its construction technique is presented. The application results indicated that the use of SCC not only makes construction go smoothly and rapidly but also achieves a better quality of construction without increasing the costs.
