Abstract:

The introduction of Nepal's first Concrete-Filled Steel Tube (CFST) arch bridge represents a pivotal moment in the nation's infrastructure development. Nepal's diverse and rugged terrain poses distinct challenges for bridge construction, demanding innovative solutions. Arch bridges, with their durability and adaptability, seamlessly integrate with the country's topography, spanning vast gaps and navigating varied terrains. This makes them an ideal choice for crossing Nepal's towering mountains, steep valleys, and numerous rivers. The potential implementation of Concrete-Filled Steel Tube (CFST) arch bridges in Nepal holds great promise, reflecting their success in projects like China's Third Pingnan Bridge. CFST arch bridges offer robustness and adaptability, capable of withstanding heavy loads and unpredictable weather conditions. Nepal's inaugural CFST arch bridge project marks a significant milestone in the nation's infrastructure development. While challenges such as specialized expertise and fostering innovation persist, the government's commitment and collaboration with key stakeholders signify progress. The completion of the design phase by 2023 and subsequent international evaluations set the stage for construction, scheduled to commence in mid-2027. In summary, Nepal's journey towards its first CFST arch bridge exemplifies the fusion of engineering innovation and natural aesthetics, paving the way for future projects in similarly demanding landscapes. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
